Pearl Jam
Tour 2007 - Support: The Futureheads / Interpol
21.06.2007 ISS Dome / Düsseldorf
On the stage in Dusseldorf's ISS DOME venue behind Pearl jam the sea is dividing. Actually one wave is coming from the right side and the other from the left but the description with the division suits better to what I wanted to say. The new stage-scenery from US band is concievable clear and from what I feel it carries positive and demonstrative vibes to the performance. Other divisions in and about the ISS Dome are this evening less clear and suitable. The equiptment and rails are a part of organisation. First section, second section, seatings and standing places and for everything different colorful wristbands. Only at the Latrinegang (?!-sorry don't know what it means) you are not supervised. Don't get me wrong..basicly this is a good idea. But when one takes so much time with controling the waiting guests by the entrance and then also at the wristbands control places at conceivable unfavourable positions, one must not be surprised when chaotic scenes arise. Sure, the moving from the LTU - arena in Dome plays a big roll there, but nevertheless I think that one could provide the audience more relaxed entry, actually it should. But ok, so it was and you couldn't change it. I just don't want it to go by unnoticed. But now to the important part of the night. When everyone found it's place or got his/her drinks in the almost sold out ISS Dome, the music was able to start.
When at about 7 pm The Futureheads hit the stage the ISS was moderately crowded. If that was because of the band or because of some other reasons you can judge by yourself. Personally I couldn't gain much out of the combo from Sunderland (UK). The second supporting band Interpol played for much more filled venue and the crowd was much more entusiasting. 21.20 o' clock began the mainact of this Thursday. The ISS Dome was meanwhile fullfilled to almost every empty space.
As in Munich, seven days ago, the band started with »Sometimes«. The band seems to asociate the song with Germany. The last years the song was rarely played, but this time in Dusseldorf – the fourth time of the last six concerts in Germany. To heat up the pack they began with »Whipping« and »Do the Evolution« - hammers right on start. Goal-providing they gave rarely played pearls as »Brain of J«, »In hiding« or »Once« into the main set, with tested accelerated picks like »Severed Hand«, »Why go« or » Daughter« they nailed it. Lead guitarist Mike McCready began striking early with the »behind the head« interludes. There was no difference if you were standing or sitting anywhere on the grandstand – it was obvious that the guys were having fun and from the comunication with the audience it was clear that they had something special prepared for the night. „Insignificance“, „Sad“, „Life Wasted“ and dreamlike versions of »Come Back« (preceded by an »I'm Open«- teaser) and the Mike McCready's number »Inside Job« - are songs that cannot be heard on every Peal Jam gig. My absolute highpoint of the main set came after 45 minutes. The band attuned already into the next song, but Vedder wanted to say something quick. With a little ironic passing glance at the fans in the first row he went into »Breath«. One relative rare played song, as also the following – »State of Love and Trust« from the 1992 »Singles«- Soundtrack.
It made no difference that the audience was spoken to in English and that the band had Dusseldorf in front of their eyes for the first time. The impulsive thanking, chearing in between and after the songs in the proper manner –all for the american musicians. The southamerican fan that was invited to the stage before the Ramones cover »I believe in Miracles« will never forget the concert. He couldn't be motivated into the singing but it was enough to get him into Pogo dancing. The wonderfull »Black« and from the audience ardent awaited »Alive« ended the first encore break and then with »Not for You« - another hammer. At this point the collective cut-through somersaults in the venue sanked out of nostalgic reasons that were valued for twelve to fifteen years.
The second encore was introduced by Stone Gossard's guitar. „Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town“ and »Given to Fly« guided with sing-along. Rarely a concert goes by without this number and maximum of handful legs stay calm and on the ground during almost four minutes. The climax of variety is fulfiled and it's time for the last act. »Rats«, the song that was from 1995 rarely found on the setlists, not practiced, and played as a request, leaves the band agleamed with venuelights. The Who's »Baba O'Riley« and the simple bouncer »Yellow Ledbetter« accompanies the joyful faces with soaked T-Shirts and more than fulfiled expectations into the Dusseldorf's night.
