Pearl Jam
Tour 2007 / Support: The Futureheads
12.06.2007 Olympiahalle / Munich
When we arrived, the sun was shinning. Suitable to the event. Finally Pearl Jam are in town! Unbelievable. Before that it was six years of waiting for European Tour of the quintet from Seattle. This time from the last concert in Athens only eight and a half monts have passed. Since June 8th they are playing thirteen concerts. Munich is the premiere of the four German shows and the first solo/individual concert after festival gigs in Lisbon and Madrid. What follows shows that the group is obwiously happy with pulling all the strings by themselves.
The Olympiahalle lies right next to the Olypicstadium in the Olympicpark. The sea.. a lot of green areas..we lay down on the meadow and wait in anticipation until the let-in. On the inside the venue has got lovelly charm of the 70's. We supply ourselves with the drinks and let the opening band be an opening band. The concert is not sold out, 8000 appreciative fans came. They will not regret it! That became clear already at the opener.
With Sometimes the first rarerity is unpackt. Calm begining. The song was in played only three times in the last four years. Inclusive today. What an upbeat. Then the merciless rock. With Porch and Why Go from the debut record Ten the sweating continues. The light show is economical. Nothing should distract music. It speaks for itself. He who knows Live-Qualities from Eddie Vedder, Matt Cameron, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard (with the matching summer hat) knows what I mean. Also the stage-set with the two opposite waves is spartanich=spartanlike (?).
Unfortunately the sound on our site is pretty bad. The instruments are looping, the PA rattles and drones and you can barely understand what Eddie Vedder is saying. Although the great voice of it is hard to demolish. Not suprisingly, it continues with "God`s Dice", "Given To Fly", "Dissident" and "Severed Hand" with full power. First graspings of air then with "Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In A Small Town". The crowd worships it's heroes. Then "Sad" from "Lost Dogs" follows. Then "Unemployable" from the current record "Pearl Jam" and "Even Flow" that is always welcomed. Matt Cameron shows his art with the minutes lasting drum solo. The mixing is great. In the end Pearl Jam playes something from every of the nine studio records at least one song. Surprises all around.
I got Shit is one of them. The piece appears on the 1995 Merkinball LP with Neil Young. Or Down that was released in Oder 2002 as a B-Seite of "I Am Mine"-Single. In between "Whipping" - again something to rock. The venue is cooking (it is so hot) and the adrenaline is coming out of my ears. Marvellous! With the calm "Present Tense", "Save You" and bursting "Rearviewmirror" the Main Set ends. You can feel how much fun the band (temporarily supported by Boom Gaspar that plays Hammond)represents, what they mean, when they left the stage.
"Inside Job" ist the name of the first encore song. With it's silenced begining the piece is suited for an opener. After that "Do The Evolution" and "Betterman". Eddie Vedder begins the song alone with his guitar and the whole crowd sings along. I got the goosebumps and was getting hotter. Fortunatelly I could sit down after the obligatory "Alive". One isn't getting younger. Pearl Jam too, went for a quick drink, but dived in back real soon.
Better said, Eddie Vedder's solo. Only with the acoustic guitar he sang "No More War" from the Soundtrack of anti-was film "Body Of War". Beautiful!! Another highlight! It couldn't be the last, because with the "Footsteps" (B-Site of the "Jeremy"-Single from 1992) it continues. I always wanted to hear this song live. This is the last point after which they couldn't top the evening anymore. So I thought! Then very rare played Neil Young-Cover "Throw Your Hatred Down" followed.. of off "Mirrorball"-record from 1995. Then "Blood", but I had no more strenght. With full venue lightening "Baba O`Riley" from The Who ends the set after more than two hours. The Who are playing tomorrow in Munich.
When we came out it was raining. The heaven cried friendly tears, it couldn't be any different. This was the ninth time I saw Pearl Jam and I can say that every concert was something special. The changing setlists alone provide that. Munich will be one of the best on my list. Next week London. Hopefully for a change the sun will be shining.
