Frankfurt - Rain and lightning lashed Germany Thursday, and a man was
killed when a circus-tent collapsed at a rock festival in the south of the
country.
Frankfurt International Airport cancelled 44 take-offs and 11 landings
because of storm danger, an airport spokesman said, and 30 incoming
flights were diverted to other airports.
Some take-offs were delayed up to an hour as pilots waited for scarce
departure time-slots.
A summer storm killed a man Wednesday while he was strawberry picking near
Cologne, and a first-aid official was killed Thursday at the Southside
Festival near the small south-western town of Neuhausen ob Eck.
Police said he had been sitting in a St John's Ambulance van which was hit
by the heavy metal beam of a collapsing circus tent. Two other first-aid
volunteers in the vehicle were seriously injured.
The tent was wrecked by rain and wind as it was being erected in
preparation for the weekend rock event, for which 45,000 tickets have been
sold.
Meanwhile suburban trains in Frankfurt waited for up to 10 minutes early
Thursday when lightning caused short-circuits at a railway signalling hub.
In southern Germany, lightning strikes during the morning set several
buildings on fire and cloudbursts created so much surface water that low
buildings were flooded.
Forecasters said more storms, heavy rain and tornadoes were expected
during the day.
