Judge Rules For Vedder In Copyright Case

(RTTNews) - A federal judge has ruled in favor of Eddie Vedder in a copyright infringement case stemming from changes the Pearl Jam frontman made to the lyrics of a song for the movie Into the Wild.

Songwriter Gordon Peterson sued Vedder and Universal Music Publishing for changes made to the song "Hard Sun," which appeared on the soundtrack for the Sean Penn-directed film.

On Friday, a U.S. District Court judge said that some lyric changes are allowed under the law and changing the words did not constitute copyright infringement.

There are other issues in the case, stemming from claims that Peterson's licensing deal prevented the use of the song in films.

Into the Wild was released in 2007. The soundtrack represented Eddie Vedder's first solo studio album.

Canadian singer/songwriter for changing the lyrics to a song he recorded for the INTO THE WILD soundtrack.

The Pearl Jam star recorded Gordon Peterson’s tune Hard Sun in 2007 for Sean Penn’s hit film, but Peterson, who originally wrote the track in 1987, wasn’t happy when he heard the finished version - and realised the rock icon had altered the lyrics.

Peterson is now suing Vedder and has filed papers in New York’s Manhattan federal court.

The suit states, “Vedder altered certain key lyrics of Hard Sun… eroding the integrity of the composition.”

Executives at Universal Music are also targeted in the lawsuit after allegedly licensing the track without his permission.

Peterson is demanding all profits from the “acts of infringement”.

However, Vedder’s lawyer Gregory Clarick insists Peterson has no grounds for complaint.

He tells the New York Post, “We don’t see any basis for a copyright infringement claim.”

Into The Wild - MOVLP166
Eddie Vedder

'Into The Wild' is the first solo album by Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder based on his contributions to the soundtrack for the film Into The Wild. Director Sean Penn hand-picked Vedder to provide the music for his film. Previously, Vedder had contributed two songs to the soundtrack for the 1995 film Dead Man Walking and a cover of The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" to the soundtrack for the 2001 film, I Am Sam, both of which starred Penn.

The original pressing was released in 2007 in a very, very limited circulation, making it very much wanted among Pearl Jam fans. Music On Vinyl offers these fans the opportunity to obtain this album. It will be released in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with artwork by Anton Corbijn and an additional 28 page booklet with lyrics, and exclusive liner notes by director Sean Penn.

* 180 grams audiophile vinyl

Fake ?
