https://www.facebook.com/10696482913/po ... /?sfnsn=moGIGATON: noun. a unit of explosive force equal to one billion (109) tons of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Also the possible title of the upcoming new album by Pearl Jam.
Fans around the globe are currently on an information gathering scavenger hunt in Toronto, New York, Seattle, Mexico City, Los Angeles (Venice Beach), Sao Palo, Santiago, Sydney, Berlin, London as Paris using hints provided by Pearl Jam via their website, pearljam.com, the band's Ten Club Fan Club newsletter and social media channels.
The initial images was leaked on Pearl Jam's social media accounts depicting the band's name within what could be a seismograph/seismometer or heartbeat or polygraph test results or soundwave in dark red on a navy blue background at midnight Pacific time today, January 10, 2020.
At 7 AM Pacific, Pearl Jam posted a second vague image that appeared to be three flames in a triangle layout, potentially fitting in with the wave graph from the first hint posted. One theory is that the top flame represents a candle for hope, the bottom left flame as a heart for love and the bottom right as a peace symbol.
Pearl Jam fans were caught by surprise at 11 AM Pacific, when the pearljam.com website and Ten Club newsletter came out with an interactive map from MapBox.com pinning eleven cities around the world with the flames from the second hinted photo from earlier that morning.
Using Google and Instagram filters, Pearl Jam teased, "We have something special for you. Locate the nearest marker and activate the lens once you arrive."
By clicking the flame pin on each city, a set of map coordinates is displayed. Intrigued by the challenge, Pearl Jam's fans around the world went in search of these coordinates.
The main glacier photo that is featured in all of the locations is by polar photographer Paul Nicklen. Showcased on the billmoyer.com site: Meltwater gushes from an ice cap on the island of Nordaustlandet, in Norway's Svalbard archipelago.
Known worldwide for their philanthropy and activism, based on the hints dropped by the band today, the prevailing theory is that Pearl Jam's new album will be eco-political in nature and a call to arms for global citizens to unite and do their part in evoking positive change.
"Greenland has been losing about 280 gigatons of ice per year on average, and Antarctica has lost almost 120 gigatons a year with indications that both melt rates are increasing. A single gigaton of water would fill about 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools; each gigaton represents a billion tons of water." - sealevel.nasa.gov
