Gaddercise: Matt, I am constantly influenced and inspired by you, who has inspired you most?
MattCameron: Tony Williams, Keith Moon, Steve Gadd.

jarhead: MATT, I **loved* the way you drummed for PJ on the 98 tour.... I'm just wondering if you are having to relax your style in the studio to fit Pearl Jam's groove, or if you are able to influence the sound with your own drumming style?
MattCameron: yes, it's a different style of playing.

ModernDrummer: Matt, are you so comfortable with the odd-time & polyrhythmic stuff that you can zone on it the same way you would a simple R&B groove, or are they two different animals?
MattCameron: They are the same animal, you just have to approach it the same.

Edina Vedder: Matt......how much input are you putting into Pearl Jam's new stuff?
MattCameron: they are giving me lots of input and are playing a couple of my songs.

ROLLINGrockGIRL: MATT - so are you still FILLING IN or are you PERMANENT in PJ now???
MattCameron: I am filling in permanently.

tony_williams: matt, were the band surprised that all of madison square garden wanted to hear "breath"? how long did it take you guys to remember how to play it?
MattCameron: I learned it that night.

MattCameron: so far so good.

MattCameron: it was a challenge to learn their songs in a short amount of time but it did not effect my style of playing.

MattCameron: I only did one set list for the tour.

MattCameron: First couple of shows were rough.

SoundGarfielD: Matt, do you develop certain additional fills and patterns for songs you play live and incorporate them into your rendition as the tour goes on, or do you largely wing it on fills for every show?
MattCameron: different shows, different fills.

MattCameron: I practice odd time signatures with a metronome so as to keep the groove as relaxed and steady as possible.

MattCameron: No, I am not a member but support most of it's causes.

sommz: Which prodigy song were your drums sampled? fuel my fire?
MattCameron: I can't really tell which songs I play on because they cut and pasted my
drum parts to where I can't recognize them.

Moonstar: Could you see yourself as a lead singer, you've got a nice voice.
MattCameron: No, but I do enjoy singing.

ChrisCornelljr: Matt, did you ever take any drum lessons or are you self taught?
MattCameron: yes, I took lessons when I was 17 for a year and studied mostly snare drum technique
with John Szanto from the San Diego symphony.

MattCameron: My first musical influence was Jimmy Hendrix and that got the initial spark
going to play music.

MattCameron: In my early teens I practiced from anywhere to 2 to 5 hours a day.

MattCameron: We helped create a scene that was later called Grunge so in that case
I guess we had a hand in creating "it".

MattCameron: When done right it can be good but it's very hard to get a drum solo to sound musical.

MattCameron: It was a movie that was put together by jpeople that
were living in our neighborhood growing up as a kid and they used people in
the neighborhood to be in the movie.

Matt Cameron: There are many but the most recent memorable one was in New York in '97 when I was hit in the ear w/ a lemon and was knocked out momentarily during the 2nd song. And being the trouper I am, finished out the set.

Cronky: Gonna jam with any more Jazz bands? I think you definitely should.
Matt Cameron: Hopefully I'll be playing some more jazz in the future.

Christi: Speaking of web surfing...my husband is heavily into ocean surfing and used to see Eddie V out waiting for sets in San Diego. Did you ever surf when you lived in San Diego by any chance?
Matt Cameron: I was an avid body surfer when I grew up in San Diego and have just taken up board surfing.

Matt Cameron: ...As of right now, I will strictly be filling in for Jack on this tour. They have not yet asked me to record with them.

skulmstr: what do you think is pearl jam's best stuff?
Matt Cameron: I like their last 2 records the most.

Yield: What's the difference between Soundgarden live and Pearl Jam live?
Matt Cameron: PJ actually likes performing and that's the big difference betweent the 2 bands.

rockNfopp - Matt- were Jeff Buckley and Chris good friends?
Matt Cameron - rocknfopp...Jeff and Chris were very close and Jeff's death hit Chris very hard.

StickIt: Matt, what was your first set of drums?
Matt Cameron: My first real kit was a Japanese kit the brand was Karen and I went through the set in about a year.

Fugazi: matt is it going to be hard to learn so many pj songs for the tour?
Matt Cameron: So far it's been fairly easy because their songs are based around the vocal and there aren't too many tricky parts in their songs.

Yield: what's your favorite pearl jam song to play?
Matt Cameron: So far my favorite PJ song is "Faithful".

Yield: is jack irons doing alright? will he return for studio recordings?
Matt Cameron: I hope Jack is getting back to normal and as far as I know he will return to the band.

Matt Cameron: Yes, when I play live I'm improvising and embelishing all the time.

Matt Cameron: I thought it was a sin when the looped Charlie Watts on their latest record.

Matt Cameron: Hard bop jazz drumming.

Matt Cameron: To have the ultimate uber supergroup I would have both Chris and Eddie as my singers. My two favorite rock singers.

Matt Cameron: That's a little too personal.
