Five Questions with Stone Gossard

http://thecomet.com/posts/five_question ... ne_gossard

This is going to be a very big year for Stone Gossard. Not only is it Pearl Jam’s 20th Anniversary, Stone is also supporting the latest release of his other band Brad titled “Best Friends?” The album was released through Pearl Jam’s Monkeywrench Records and features vocalist/pianist Shawn Smith, drummer Regan Hagar, bassist Mike Berg and, of course, Stone. He answers five questions with The Comet.

1. You started working on your new Brad album “Best Friends?” seven years ago. Why did it take so long to release?

At some point we lost momentum with it. We made the record and then over a period of time, everyone started getting frustrated with the situation. Sometimes you have to have to put things down and think, okay, this isn’t really working. Then you listen to it a couple of years later and fall back in love with it. We all had different stages of putting it aside and getting back to it again. I’m really excited about it. We’ve been together almost 18 years now. It’s still going and I still love it. It’s a process. I love art like that, particularly when you make something a long time ago. You forget about it, pick it up again and fall in love with the songs. We wrote all of them really quickly.

2. How are you navigating this music climate with Brad?

We just found new management that we are excited about (Dangerbird). We are going to play more shows. We’re indie. It’s available online in general and we do have some distribution to mom and pop stores. We are not really in and big retail. We are lifers. Our process is to figure out how to sell records.

3. How did Brad start?

Regan (Hagar) and I have been friends since 1984. We’ve been hanging out together and playing music for a long time. I had just come back from the first successful Pearl jam tour. I started playing music with Shawn (Smith) and Regan. We recorded that first record (“Shame”) in two weeks. We just booked studio time. It was really old friends and a love of music. Compare it to Pearl Jam and you will see it’s diametrically opposed. It was scratching another itch.

4. What’s next for 2011?

We are working on an album. I’m recording music all the time. Sometimes I sing on it. It might turn into some solo records at some point. I do like to sing, but it’s not as satisfying as working with the collaborative process. It’s so much fun to wake up in the morning and write music. I can write a song in a hour and demo it in a couple of hours. Sometimes, not writing is the best thing you can do. I welcome wonderful distractions, my family, dinner with friends, living. It clears the palate.

5. 2011 is also the 20th anniversary year for Pearl Jam.

It’s pretty amazing. I’m in a state of gratitude about all of it. You stick with it when it’s a struggle and a headache ¬– you go through the ups and downs. Twenty years and you get to look back. It’s cool and exciting. You built it and are so proud of it. That’s what you get when you stick with something long enough. Painting on the same canvass it can be frustrating at times. Mostly I was frustrating to other people. I look back and can be wiser than when I was 25 years old. We get to make another record. Everyone wants so play music.

Stone Gossard, along with Barbara Ireland and Keith Lowe singing the 'Salmon Song' for a fabulous night of local wine, food and music our at Carnation's Full Circle Farm as a benefit for Stewardship Partners. The event promoted awareness of local farms that provide healthy organic food and actively participate in environmental stewardship.

Are you working on new Pearl Jam simultaneously as you're touring with BRAD?

We're always picking away at this new record. We're plugging along, and it's taking shape. It's pretty exciting.

What's the most exciting aspect of this process?

Trying not to recreate Backspacer is one of the things we want to do. We want to make sure we're not just locking ourselves in. We want to keep expanding our horizons. We're still writing, and what it's going to be is still up in the air.

Bonne nouvelle..
