When Jeff Angell and Barrett Martin decided to form a new band, they didn’t have to look very far for support. As two longtime members of the Seattle music scene, with time served in bands like Mad Season and Screaming Trees, they only needed to reach out to some old friends. Some very famous old friends.
The new band, christened Walking Papers, needed a bassist, so Angell and Martin enlisted the services of ex-Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver member Duff McKagan — and when it came time to record guitar solos for their debut album, they reached out to Pearl Jam‘s Mike McCready, who had previously worked with Martin in Mad Season. They didn’t stop there, either; the new record, due in October, also features brass work from trumpeter Dave Carter, trombonist Ed Ulman, and sax player Dan Spalding.
BARRETT MARTIN FORMS NEW SUPERGROUP FEATURING DUFF MCKAGAN & MIKE MCCREADY
Walking Papers is a new blues-rock band formed by Jeff Angell and Barrett Martin, two long-serving veterans of the Seattle music scene. Jeff previously sang and played guitar for the bands Post Stardom Depression and The Missionary Position, and Barrett, a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, played for grunge pioneers Skin Yard and Screaming Trees, as well as the super groups Mad Season and Tuatara…
This debut album features a stellar cast of additional musicians who have each added their unique musical voice to the album: Visceral bass lines from Duff McKagan (Guns & Roses, Velvet Revolver), blistering guitar solos from Mike McCready (Pearl Jam, Mad Season), elegant keyboard stylings from Benjamin Anderson, and soulful horn arrangements from Dave Carter (Trumpet), Dan Spalding (Baritone Sax), and Ed Ulman (Trombone). The album was recorded by Catherine Ferrante at Avast Studios in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino at Soundhouse in Seattle. Mastering was done by Chris Hanzsek at Hanzsek Audio. The album will be released on October 2, 2012.
Walking Papers show on their debut album that a great song can be conveyed through percolating marimbas, vibraphone, piano, and trumpet, just as easily as it can with thundering drums, bass, and a howling guitar solo. The songs on this album stand alone as individual stories, but taken together as a whole, they tell a much larger narrative that conveys the tales of wandering souls, the collisions of will, and the dark beauty of the American heart that is ever searching for truth and meaning in a collapsing world.

BARRETT MARTIN REVEALS WHEN UNRELEASED MAD SEASON SONGS WERE RECORDED, SAYS HE’S BEEN WRITING WITH MIKE MCCREADY
Former Screaming Trees/Mad Season drummer Barrett Martin recently did an interview with Big Tea Blog about Walking Papers (featuring guest appearances by Pearl Jam/Mad Season guitarist Mike McCready), and he had this to say about working with Mike McCready for the first time since Mad Season ended: “Mike and I are old friends that go way back, and even though we hadn’t recorded together since Mad Season in about 1996, it was just like the old days. We’ve been rehearsing together the last few weeks, writing some new songs, and it’s pretty great. We were joking the other day that we are now in our mid-40s, but we are now much better players than we were in our mid-20s, when we formed Mad Season. It’s a funny trick the Universe plays on you – we’re older and grayer, but also much better musicians.”
