En attendant la setlist,
a-m-a-z--i-n-g.....
Got row 8, right of stage from 10c. The view was spectacular. Eddie was in such a great mood all night. He was truly in "awe"and totally humbled by the experience of playing there. I really got the feeling that it was just as much of a treat for him to play there as it was for us to see him there.
He walks out and everyone is cheering! He does a quick wave, collects himself, and sits. He nods his head and everyone sits in unison it seemed. He stated that "I hope you don't mind, but I've never been here before and I'm going to make myself comfortable. I hope you all can do the same."
Later on in the evening he mentioned that he had been in the music business for quite a long time and there wasn't much he had not done, but this was a first for him.
You could tell from the first verse of Walking the Cow that his vocals were DEAD ON. His deep voice echoed through the historic hall like so many before him.
It is amazing how appreciative of his fans he is. He went on and on about the little girl, Lily, that he had previously met, mention that he signed her autograph book right behind Mickey Mouse.
He commented at one point that he wanted to "hear the whispers of the great ones featured on the walls and not the screaming of a banshee." "It's too early to get loud." there will be time for that later."
My honest to God favorite moment of the night was when the redneck in the balcony yelled, "Freebird!" and Ed continued to chastise him, saying something to the effect of, "Get out of here! I am serious! Get that fucking guy out of here! That joke is so old people have been using it before I was born, which is before the song was recorded!" I laughed for a good ten minutes, and also stood up to cheer! Bravo!
Ed was so funny tonight! He told the story of how two years ago he picked up a mandolin and spoke to it and told it, "I don't know what to do with you really, but stick with me and I'll talk you places. And here he is playing at the Ryman!" He joked, turning his head back as if looking at it behind him, that he had been at the guitar shop next door the day before possibly looking for it's replacement.
He also said, "Years ago Van "the Man" Morrison played a show here and people were upset because he didn't play everyone's favorite song. Well, He's Van "The Man" he can play what he wants, if he was Van "The Pussy" we would have played Brown-eyed Girl, but he's not. He's "The Man." Then he mentioned that Roy Acuff always told anyone who played the Ryman to "play the song that got you here." This lead to the reworked "Betterman." Awesome. Great energy, great singalong.
I have always loved Porch. Always. Tonight was better than ever, and I did NOT expect it to be. I thought acoustically it would lose its power, its feeling. Oh no! Baddass....almost shed a tear I was so happy!
It isn't Eddie unless he makes a mistake...he attempted Believe You Me, forgot the words, and went right into Wishlist without skipping a beat! Great recovery!
Highlight of the night: ARC! I heard Arc in 2003 at Little Rock. It was powerful. It was tragic. It was beautiful then.....tonight.....it came to life. Before playing it he said something eluding to the Rockslide victims, can't remember exactly, and he mentioned being in a state of mind of church. (Oddly enough he made a previous mention of God earlier in the night.) If anyone has a less fuzzy memory help me out on this.
His vocals were bouncing off the walls, tearing through the pews. This song was made to be preformed at this venue. Just magnificent.
