ACL confirms Pearl Jam as headliner

Confirmation by cartoon? We’ll take it. This has been posted on the ACL Fest Web site. Pearl Jam will also do a taping of the fest’s namesake TV show while they’re in town.

The band’s last appearance in Austin was in 1995 at Southpark Meadows.

Austin Music Source was the first to write that the Seattle rockers were the likely headliner, based on information from a C3 Presents insider. Other names revealed in March were Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon and Ghostland Observatory.

Meanwhile, Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth are both doing a tapings of “Austin City Limits” during the fest, so you can go ahead and put them on the list. Charles Attal of C3 would neither confirm nor deny those acts would be playing at Zilker Park Oct. 2- 4.

C3 may have timed today’s cartoon confirmation as to not be overshadowed by this morning’s announcement that Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys and Dave Matthews Band are headlining San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in late August at Golden Gate Park. Although Eddie Vedder and company don’t sell many records anymore, they’re a HUGE concert draw, the Grungeful Dead.

The lineup will be officially revealed April 28.

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band and the Beastie Boys will headline this year’s Austin City Limits festival, taking place in the Texas capital’s Zilker Park October 2-4th. The eclectic bill also includes current Rolling Stone cover stars Kings of Leon, Sonic Youth, Ben Harper and Relentless7, the Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys and over 150 more acts from the world of rock, rap, folk and blues.

If a festival headlined by Pearl Jam, DMB and the Beasties sound familiar, there’s a good reason for it: The three bands will also be the marquee acts at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival. For Pearl Jam, the ACL show is only the second announced date on their U.S. itinerary. DMB is spending the entire summer on the road in support of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King and the Beastie Boys are pretty much playing anything that has the word “Festival” in it, booking slots at Lollapalooza and All Points West.

Pearl Jam to do ACL taping Oct. 3

The day before they headline the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Pearl Jam will tape an episode of the namesake TV show. With a capacity of 320, it looks to be the toughest ticket for an “ACL” taping since Coldplay in 2005. Show producer Terry Lickona said to check the http://www.austincitylimits.org closer to showtime for ticket giveaway info.

“I sure wish the new studio was ready for Pearl Jam,” Lickona said, referring to the 2,750-capacity venue being built on West Second Street across from City Hall. “We’d still have to turn away people, but not quite as many.” Construction of the $40 million Austin City Limits Theater is expected to be completed in October 2010.

Also added to the coming 35th season of ACL are Allen Toussaint, who’ll tape his ACL debut June 30, and M. Ward Aug. 5. Again, check the web site for ticket details.
