Patrick Murphy (36) broke his arm in three places in the accident at the Seattle band's Tuesday night show in Dublin.
Sources said that the man sat between a couple who were at the front of the balcony and began chatting with them.
He then seemed to jump down on the sound desk below, but his fall was broken by a canopy which covered the sound engineer.
"He took it upon himself to climb up and from there he jumped onto the canopy and just slid onto the ground," the source said.
"People around got a shock, they didn't know what had happened.
"We could see that he was moving his leg and he was treated on the scene by paramedics."
Mr Murphy, from Newcastle West, Limerick, who is understood to be a worker at Fat Freddy's Pizzeria in Galway city, was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital where he is recovering from the incident.
A representative from Amphitheatre Ireland and MCD confirmed that they were aware of the incident but were confident that there were no security concerns.
"The management of The O2 and MCD can confirm that a 36-year-old man was injured when he jumped from a balcony at tonight's concert," the spokesman said.
"He was treated by the medical staff at the venue.
"He was then transferred to the Mater Hospital for further treatment and observation."
Detailed witness statements were taken at the scene while comments on fan sites were concerned for the man's wellbeing after the incident.
"It seemed as if he was playacting, got overexcited during the last song and wanted to jump down and be in the middle of the crowd," one source said.
There were additional reports of crowdsurfing and fans charging at the barriers in the venue.
However, the spokesman was unable to confirm if this was the case. The representative said that the O2 and MCD take all measures to ensure that the highest security is maintained.
