VELVET REVOLVER Guitarist Says RICK RUBIN's Style Of Working Was Not What Band Needed

VELVET REVOLVER is recording its second album, tentatively titled "Libertad", with producer Brendan O'Brien, who's worked with AUDIOSLAVE, PEARL JAM and singer Scott Weiland's former group, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. An initial stint with producer Rick Rubin did not work out.

VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Dave Kushner, who was accessorizing for the Grammys at the Kate Nobelius Style studio on Wednesday (Feb. 7), gave the Artisan News Service the skinny on what went down with the and Rubin.

"It was originally Rick who I was excited about because I had known for years but never worked with him," Kushner said. "I think it had a lot to do with what the band needed at the time. I think we didn't realize that we needed — because we kind of had been meandering for a year writing songs — I think we needed someone to corral us and say, 'OK, guys come on let's go. Let's do this,' and that's not really Rick's style of working."

VELVET REVOLVER has contributed some items to the 49th Annual Online Charity Auction benefiting MusiCares and the Grammy Foundation. The auction runs now through February 15 with a special second round running February 12 through the 22. Visit http://www.ebay.com/grammy to check out the auction.

Matt Reveals Cover Songs

This has already been discussed a bit in the CFR topic, but such an important piece of news deserves its own topic in the News board...

During the Libertad sessions, VR have recorded cover versions of Talking Heads' Psycho Killer and Electric Light Orchestra's Can't Get It Out Of My Head.

Weiland, Slash To Honor Van Halen At Rock Hall; Revolver LP #2 Done

Image

Velvet Revolver might perform in Van Halen's stead at induction ceremony; will tour in support of Libertad.

Forgive Velvet Revolver for not yet having picked a single from their just-completed second album, Libertad.

"We had this joke in the studio that it's all A-sides, no B-sides," singer Scott Weiland said recently. "So it's really kind of hard to pick. There are just a lot of great songs."

VR credit the greatness to two factors, the first being producer Brendan O'Brien, who worked with Weiland during his Stone Temple Pilots days.

"He has really helped the guys challenge themselves on a musical level," Weiland said. "[Libertad] definitely still rocks, but it's incredibly more musical. There's a lot more textures, and Slash and Duff [McKagan] have really sort of risen the bar. It just goes places that the first album didn't go."

"He is the best musician in the room," guitarist Dave Kushner added. "I talked to Tom Morello because he has done records with Brendan, and he said the same thing. And to have a producer who is so musical, you can't just skate by. He'll say, 'Why don't you try this chord?' And I'm like, 'I've never heard of that chord!' "

The second factor is that, unlike with their debut, Velvet Revolver actually feel like a band now.

"We toured for two years," Weiland said. "And [because of that] we've really gotten close during the making of this record."

While he admits the bandmembers got a bit sick of each other touring behind 2004's Contraband, Weiland says the guys are now looking forward to returning to the road.

"We're actually going to do a short American tour of some intimate clubs and small theaters, just to warm up," Weiland said. "Then we're going to South America and Europe, then back for a big American tour at the end of the summer."

Moreover, according to the band's publicist, Weiland and Slash will give the induction speech for honorees Van Halen during the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, set to unfold inside New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel on March 12. In light of recent rumors, it's unclear whether Velvet Revolver will perform at the event in Van Halen's place — and whether any of the members of the latter band will even be present to accept the honor (see "Van Halen Reunion Tour Might Not Happen After All").

In the meantime, Weiland is also finishing his second solo album, which he plans to release at the end of 2007 (see "Scott Weiland Pumped For Velvet Revolver LP, Solo Collabo With Pharrell").

"It kind of goes all over the map like the first one, but a bit more focused because I'm not using drugs anymore," Weiland said. "It has a little bit of Latin jazz, some R&B-oriented stuff, some stuff with beats. There's some stuff that's really kind of out there. I'm into creating sounds, but it's all about melody, really."

Before finishing, Weiland hopes to collaborate with Mick Jones of the Clash.

"We wanted to work with him with Velvet Revolver, but we didn't get the chance to do it," he said. "So I'm thinking about getting a hold of him, working on a track or two."

Libertad is due this spring.

Wife of Scott Weiland arrested in Burbank for torching clothes

BURBANK, Calif.- Hours after Scott Weiland and his wife brawled in a luxury hotel, the Velvet Revolver rocker's wife was arrested for torching his $10,000 wardrobe outside their Toluca Lake home, police said Monday.
Mary Weiland, 31, was booked for investigation of felony arson vandalism after officers responding to a "female burning clothes" call at 10 p.m. Saturday found a trash can full of smoldering clothes, Sgt. Mathew Ferguson said.

Officers telephoned Weiland and he said the wardrobe was worth $10,000, the sergeant said. The couple's two children, ages 4 and 6, were placed in the custody of Weiland friends.

The arrest culminated a rowdy weekend for the couple.

A few miles away at the boutique Graciela Hotel on Pass Avenue, the couple got into an argument that left two hotel rooms vandalized, Ferguson said. Police were called to the hotel at 3:47 p.m. Saturday.

"Both rooms had damage and items scattered, broken plates and things. It was looking definitely like items were deliberately destroyed," the sergeant said.

Mary Weiland was at the hotel with the couple's children when police arrived. She voluntarily went to the police station to give a statement and Weiland, 39, showed up later with his attorney to give a statement.

"She is a suspect in the vandalism. He is not," Ferguson said.

No charges were filed and the couple left. Ferguson said it was up to hotel owners to decide if they want the woman prosecuted for vandalism, which would be a felony because damage exceeded $400.
Ferguson said the amount of damage to the two rooms wasn't known, only that it exceeded $400.

A Graciela Hotel receptionist said Monday that there would be no comment about the incident.

The 100-room Graciela Hotel describes itself as a "home away from home" for many of its guests. Many of the rooms and suites have full kitchenettes for long term stays.

Scott Weiland and Wife Trash Hotel Room in Bloody Fight

Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland and his wife trashed a Burbank hotel room during a rockstar-caliber rampage last weekend, and now the hotel is pressing charges against the Weilands for the damage they caused.

Sources tell TMZ that Weiland and his wife Mary ripped alarm clocks and phones from their sockets and threw them, made "dents and gauges" in the walls, and that there was even blood found on some of the linens afterward. (A picture taken at the scene shows a note attached to a trash bag that says, in Spanish, "with blood.")

The trouble started when Mary arrived at the hotel Saturday, whereupon the couple got into "a huge argument" witnessed by their two young children, who had to be taken away by Weiland's assistant. Weiland himself then left, leaving behind Mary, who could be heard throwing things in the room. The police were called, and the hotel is pressing charges for the damage caused. There's no word whether either Weiland or his wife were injured in the spat.

Weiland pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges against Mary in December 2001 and was sentenced to probation and forced to pay a fine.

Concerning the recent news story:
My wife locked herself in the adjoining room when that damage was done. I want to make it clear that I called security when I heard the glass being broken from next door. Security was unable to enter until she let them in. I sent my children off to a safe place with my assistant (who witnessed all of the events of the evening, until my wife locked herself in the room), and I left the hotel in order to avoid conflict with my wife.

Velvet Revolver Sets July Date For 'Libertad'

After scrapping the original May 29 release date, Velvet Revolver has settled on July 3 to unveil its second RCA album, "Libertad." Impacting in mid-May, the first single from the set will be "She Builds Quick Machines," one of the four new tracks the group has been playing of late during shows in South America.

"RCA did a bunch of research on what the first single should be," bassist Duff McKagan told Billboard.com last night (April 16) before a gig in Buenos Aires. "I'm pretty anti that stuff. The band had something they wanted to go with, but RCA just kept coming with it. So we decided, it's fine. It's a great f*ckin' rock song. It has a kick-ass guitar riff, a great chorus, a really big bridge and a great Slash solo."

McKagan is also high on "Last Fight," which he calls "a mid-tempo, really beautiful song; probably something you wouldn't expect from us," as well as "She Mine," described as "a fun pop ditty."

"I think 'Contraband' was a great record," he says of Velvet Revolver's 2004 debut. "It was the right one for us to make as our first record. But 'Libertad' really goes way beyond that musically. I don't think any of us could have made a better record at this point in our careers."

As previously reported, the group was planning to record "Libertad" with producer Rick Rubin but found itself at odds with his approach. Brendan O'Brien ultimately produced the album.

"We all went to dinner last August and shook on it," McKagan recalls of Rubin. "At that point, we had 30 songs. He came down the second week of September and said, 'Okay great guys, now write some more songs.' So we wrote more songs. Another month later, he was like, 'Okay great, write some more songs.' We got up to 50 songs! When somebody tells you to write more songs, you start thinking, 'Well, all of our sh*t sucks.' It's not a good place for a band like us to be at."

"Rick is a great guy," he continues. "We've all known him for a long time. But we just decided, maybe next record, or some other time." Once O'Brien took over, "he inspired all of us to dig in to the parts," McKagan says. "None of us were afraid to bring anything new to the table."

Velvet Revolver begins a short North American tour May 3 in Los Angeles, and European festival dates are on tap through early July. McKagan says fans can expect songs from its members' old bands (Guns N' Roses, Stone Temple Pilots) to crop up occasionally, but less frequently than in Velvet Revolver's early days, when it barely had enough originals to play a headlining set.

"I don't know whether we'll do it the whole tour or once in awhile," he says. "But I know people like to hear them and sometimes we really like to play them. It's songs we wrote, so why not?"

Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash was recently asked by Brazilian MTV about a possible reunion of the original GN'R lineup.

"It's been 12 years now… 11 years… and it just doesn't seem like one of those things that any of us are really thinking about doing," Slash said. "And I'm not saying never. I would say it would be a good idea to get, just for a couple of shows, to get the original STP [STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, former band of VELVET REVOLVER singer Scott Weiland] and the original GUNS N' ROSES just to do a couple of shows for the fun of it."
