Radiohead Unveils Eight New Songs In New York
June 14, 2006, 11:10 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Radiohead played its first New York show since late 2003 last night (June 13) at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden and delivered eight new songs in consideration for its next studio album. The 23-song set also featured old favorites such as "The Bends," "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Lucky."
But the group seemed much more interested in its new material, which was highlighted by the soul-tinged "House of Cards" and the angelic "Nude," a song that has been kicking around since 1998. After the show, drummer Phil Selway told Billboard.com the group has recorded the track with a string quartet.
Additional new tracks included "Bangers and Mash," which found frontman Thom Yorke doubling up with Selway on drums, the nearly rapped "15 Step," during which Yorke danced around the stage, the piano-led "Videotape" and the intense "Bodysnatchers," a showcase for Jonny Greenwood's gritty lead riffs.
Selway told Billboard.com the band is aware fans are flying in for the shows from all over the country, due to the brevity of the tour and its concentration in major markets. "Plus, we're playing so many new songs," he said. "We're very lucky that our fans will allow us to do this."
Selway added that there's no timetable to release the follow-up to 2003's "Hail to the Thief," which will be Radiohead's first album since parting ways with longtime label EMI. As previously reported, Yorke's solo debut, "The Eraser," arrives July 11 via XL Recordings. "It's all Thom," Selway says of "The Eraser," of which he admits to being a huge fan.
