SONIC YOUTH NEW LP "RATHER RIPPED" DUE FOR FOR JUNE 2006 RELEASE

Sonic Youth are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming new record. Basic tracks were recorded with engineer TJ Doherty at legendary Sear Sound Studio. Sear Sound has been the site of recording previous SY albums 'Sister' and 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star', and Thurston's 'Psychic Hearts'. Overdubs were recorded with TJ at Sear Sound as well as with engineer Aaron Mullan at the band's own studio on Murray St. - A few vocal overdubs were even done at J Mascis' in house studio in Amherst, MA. with engineer John Agnello. The band spent the most of February mixing with John Agnello at Sear Sound and later at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ. Song titles are: Incinerate, The Neutral, What a Waste, Do You Believe in Rapture?, Lights Out, Rats, Or, Pink Steam, Turquoise Boy, Sleepin Around, Jagged Brain, and Reena.

Geffen Records will issue the CD edition while the band's own Goofin' Records will release the vinyl edition of the new album.

Sonic Youth 'Rips' On New CD, Pearl Jam Tour

Sonic Youth will release its next album, "Rather Ripped," June 13 via Geffen. As previously reported, the 12-track set is the band's first to not feature longtime collaborator Jim O'Rourke since 1998's "A Thousand Leaves." Sonic Youth will support the set via several July dates with Pearl Jam and is also eyeing a run with the Flaming Lips.

"Rather Ripped" kicks off with the Kim Gordon-sung rocker "Reena" and in general offers more of a concise attack than on recent, more jam-oriented releases such as "Murray Street" and "Sonic Nurse." Gordon is more of a vocal presence as well, singing lead on five tracks, including the gentle "Turquoise Boy," which is dirtied up with bursts of noise at its conclusion.

Other highlights include Thurston Moore's propulsive "Incinerate," which seems evolved from the Sonic Youth classic "Teenage Riot," and the Lee Ranaldo-sung "Rats," which blends a dark Gordon bass grove with thick sheets of guitar.

"Some of it seems to be an extension of the last couple of records, but some hearkens forward into territory and also back to earlier, more dissonant and atonal stuff we've done," Ranaldo told Billboard.com last fall of the new material. "There's definitely some rocking songs and also some sound piece-y kind of things that are pretty interesting as well."

Here is the track list for "Rather Ripped":

"Reena"
"Incinerate"
"Do You Believe in Rapture?"
"Sleepin' Around"
"What a Waste"
"Jams Run Free"
"Rats"
"Turquoise Boy"
"Lights Out"
"The Neutral"
"Pink Steam"
"Or"

Pareil.

The DJ sucks ass, and the radio format makes it sound all cuttup...and there is a little bit of intermittent static on
some of the tracks. But Thurstons comments are funny as usual.

This make the recording sometimes abrupt...!

If I can ask one thing when I am dead
would you lay me down by the river bed?
let me wash away
let it take me back from where I came
all I am and all I was is just
blood and dirt and bones and mud
and I'm better off that way

Audience Recording, standing right behind the sound and light console, dead center, on the balcony
Sony ECM717 micropone + Sony MZ-R900 Minidisc -> analog capture to SoundBlaster Audigy -> Wavelab editing (see below) -> FLAC

editing :
The chang of MD occured after the main set, and during the first encore cheers.
Most of this first encore cheers has been cut off, as most of the second encore cheers (about 1m20s edited out)

Know issues :
A Digital Glitch during "Rats". This is on the master MD, cannot edit it out, sorry.
People get a bit talkative during the encores, but this is merely audible.

My sounding appreciation : B+/A-
