TFT Notes: 9:00PM start time. "World Wide Suicide" features curtain of sparkly light bulbs hanging from stage rafters that crackle in time with the chorus. Mike split-jumps several times during the final chorus. "Severed Hand" opens to slowly moving groups of green laser beams shooting over the audience; the accelerated tempo builds, and Ed does a split-jump after "when I get home". After "Do The Evolution", Ed comments how "it's great to be back in the home of the River Rat" (Albany's American Hockey League team is the River Rats). "Big and small, clean and dirty." Mike sang along off mic during the intro of "Elderly Woman...". Ed turns around and sings second verse of "Given To Fly" to seats behind the stage, and Jeff pogos vigorously during the second chorus. Band seems to be immersed and caught up in the guitar solo portion of "Even Flow"; Mike plays a large part of his solo with his head thrown back, Jeff stands over with Matt to play in perfect synch, Stone bobs up and down, bending from the waist, Mike then moves to his stack. Matt even plays a small solo, and Ed dances before the final chorus. At songs end, Stone goes to the mic to compliment Matt Cameron "how about those vocals from Matt Cameron- I love Matt Cameron!" Stone and Matt sing backing vocals on "Army Reserve", Stone bobs head up and down vigorously in the breakdown groove. Before the "Daughter" tag, Ed hugs his mic stand and sways, backing off to snap his fingers along as the green lasers shoot off in succession. Kaleidoscope-like swirling lights bathe the crowd during the tag. Dry ice fog creeps out from either side of the stage at the beginning of "Off He Goes". During the final chorus of "Grievance" a woman from front row center, hands Ed an American flag with the stars in a peace sign symbol, and he drapes himself in it for the rest of the song, handing it back to her after House lights flash up during the "little FUCK!" in "Jeremy". Matt adds vocals, alternating with Ed on "try to forget this/try to erase this". House lights come up to highlight crowd singing "ay yi yi yi" at end of song. Mike plays "Comatose" solo behind head. Main set ends at 10:20 PM. Ed comes back a few minutes later and talks about seeing the same people on every tour ("don't you people get laid?"), and how trying to decide what to play was difficult - some want to hear stuff they never play (the "freaks"), some want to hear the hits (the "normal" people). He mentions how when he was a teenager, normal was the worst thing you could be, so "here's to the freaks." During "Satan's Bed", Ed leans the mic stand at an angle behind him, leaning down to read the lyrics. When the mirror ball came down during "Wishlist", Ed moved slowly around in a circle in synch with its movement. The "Porch" jam featured Stone doing bouncy jumps, Ed putting on his guitar and hammering away at it, Mike playing as he walked in fast circles, and Stone moving to hunch over his effects. The encore ended at 10:57 with the half-circle bank of red lights on the stage behind Matt searching the crowd in all directions. Ed returns at 11:05 PM, moonwalking his way to his mic stand. "Last Kiss" is played with the band facing the seats behind the stage, Mike and Jeff on Matt's drum riser, and Matt even facing back, using a couple of toms and cymbals placed behind his kit. Stone sang the "oh-oh-ohhhhhhhh" animatedly off mic. At final verse of "Alive", Stone walked up to play inches away from Ed, and Ed turned to him and sang "is something wrong she said" directly into Stone's eyes, making Stone raise his eyebrows and chuckle. The mirror ball came down and spun as the song played out, Mike playing the final solo of the night behind his head.

Article - Times Union(Albany) - Long Mike McCready Interview

PREVIEW
Jam sessions
ANNE MILLER Staff Writer

11 May 2006
Times Union
THREE STAR
P20

After almost 17 years together, the five members of Pearl Jam don't adhere to the cliches of a rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Now that they're pushing 40 (or past it) the aftermath of a live show is likely to involve nothing more taxing to the system than yoga.

But the band, which hits the Pepsi Arena in Albany on Friday, continues to grow musically on stage and off. Instead, Pearl Jam's members push themselves even more these days: In the past, the band practiced maybe a week before hitting the road; this spring, they spent a month perfecting the songs off their new self-titled album.

The new songs "are a little more complex than the older stuff," said guitarist Mike McCready in an interview last week. "We wanted to make it really good."

McCready called on his cell phone from Times Square, juggling a visit with his parents and a stroll through the city with media calls and preparation for an appearance on David Letterman's show that night.

Grunge roots

McCready and the boys bassist Jeff Ament, guitarist Stone Gossard, drummer Matt Cameron and singer and guitarist Eddie Vedder came together in 1990 during the heady days of Seattle's grunge explosion, when churning guitars offered a welcome change from the synthetic pop of the 1980s.

Pearl Jam first built its sound on growling, layered guitars, Vedder's guttural vocals and detailed lyrics, and then became known for its political and anti-corporate stances. In 1994, they famously refused to play venues where Ticketmaster controlled sales (the ticket merchant would not allow the band to cap ticket prices at $20). Eventually, band members testified before Congress about the company's stranglehold on the industry.

The war with Ticketmaster proved to be a publicity gold mine for the band, but a logistical bust. In order to escape the company's reach, Pearl Jam found itself playing small-market stages that were often a hundred miles or more from urban centers, McCready said making the fight more arduous for the very music lovers the band was standing up for. Eventually, the U.S. Department of Justice dropped its investigation of Ticketmaster's practices, and Pearl Jam dropped its fight.

McCready said the band has a slightly moderated stance these days.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for people to see us," McCready said. "We're going to play the game but we're still going to maintain whatever control we can."

Leftist causes

The band has continued as an outspoken torchbearer for liberal causes, headlining numerous benefits over the years for causes ranging from Murder Victims' Families For Reconciliation to Tibetan independence. In 2004, the band joined the Vote for Change tour, which raised awareness and funds for John Kerry's presidential bid.

McCready says the band works hard to keep self-righteousness to a bare minimum. "It's a balance between art and a little bit of politics, and to maintain that balance is important," he said. "If you come out too hard or too political on one side, you come off as preaching, and alienate people."

The new return

This time around, Pearl Jam leaves the protest to the music. The new album the band's eighth was released last week on J Records; the band split with its longtime label Epic in 2003.

The new work has received one of the band's biggest media blitzes since "Yield" in 1998; many critics have called it a welcome return to the hard-charging chords of the early 1990s.

The first single, the propulsive "World Wide Suicide," suggests that the band is as politically engaged as it was when that other Bush was president: "Medals on a wooden mantle/next to a handsome face/that the president took for granted/writing checks that others pay."

"People that go to a Pearl Jam show realize that we're pretty liberal," McCready said.

It's not all politics this time around. McCready said they're mixing in more old favorites such as "Why Go," a thrasher about a misdiagnosed mental patient, from the band's debut album "Ten."

And he can't wait to bring "Severed Hand," off the new album, to American audiences. While not overtly political, the song's central image suggests the sort of carnage that's become all too regular on the evening news: "Tried to walk, found a severed hand/ Recognized it by the wedding band." In England this spring, crowds embraced the song like they had known it for years, McCready said.

The right chords

After weeks of practice, the new songs are almost second nature to the band, said McCready. The extra work allows McCready to play without thinking, which explains how a man legendary for his on- stage energy bouncing from speaker to speaker like an errant pinball still manages to hit all the right chords.

"A lot of the time I don't even think about it," he said. "I just turn into this thing, and it's just chaos."

Before the chaos at the Pepsi, however, McCready and his bandmates will probably be back in the dressing room engaging in their favorite pre-show ritual: pingpong. They have a traveling set, McCready said.

"Stone's intense, I'm kind of all over the place kind of like we are in the band," McCready said, of their paddle skills. Lately, McCready has noticed how Ament has changed up his style, becoming less predictable and more victorious.

McCready has two more show rituals. Before a concert, he likes to take in the character of a city. He said he's looking forward to strolling around downtown Albany's Capitol landmarks. In Buffalo he stumbled onto a minor-league baseball game.

The morning after a show, McCready focuses on his yoga practice. Like a runner pounding the pavement, McCready's on-stage exertions leave him stiff the next morning. So he stretches and bends.

All the exercise, exploration and games also breaks up the monotony of travel, he said.

"You wake up, you get in a van, you go to the show, you get in a van, you go to the hotel we're always in a van," McCready said. "That's the part of it that gets tiring. The playing never does.

"The playing is where it's at and the pingpong."

Before the first encore Ed made a comment that most fans at the show fall into two groups: those that want to hear the hits and the freaks who want to hear the songs that have never been played before. Well, my name is Brian and I'm a freak. Tonight's show blew me away. The hits certainly rocked tonight, but most of the 10 clubbers around me really went nuts when they played the rarities.

The opener of Wasted Reprise segued nicely into Life Wasted. I know it's been talked about here, but I'm glad they finally put these two songs together in concert. And Last Kiss and Come Back fit together nicely in the second encore. Mike and Stone really went off on the guitar solos in what had to be the longest, most intense version of Porch I have witnessed. After a smoke break Ed picked up his guitar and joined in.

As for the rarities, where to begin? Red Mosquito, the Another Brick In the Wall tag on Daughter, Off He Goes, hearing Gone and Comatose live for the first time, and the entire first encore: Satan's Bed and Rats! Are you kidding me? Every one was accompanied by some of the loudest crowd singing I've heard. And to top it all off, at the end Jeff donned the Bush mask and gave a double middle finger salute (yes I've got pics). Hopefully Comatose will become a regular part of the set. Full of growling Ed lyrics and Matt's booming drums, it was the highlight of the night for me.

I'm hoarse, I'm tired, and I've got a smile on my face I won't be able to wipe off for a week. I thought Toronto II would be hard to top. But for us freaks, tonight delivered.

+

Rats was great. Ed commented... "This is for thr home team" referring to the Albany River Rats hockey team. He also mentioned it was the first time he believed they played it since Matt joined the band.
