Pearl Jam—Love 'Em or Leave 'Em

Image

Pearl Jam inspire extreme love or extreme hate. Below we asked two writers to take sides on the Seattle grunge stalwarts' worth. Let the verbal fisticuffs begin!

THE LOVER

I came from Huntington Beach in 1986 to Issaquah High School and knew nothing of Seattle's music scene. At 14, I made some friends here, but music got me through. In 1991, while still listening to Metallica, Depeche Mode, and SoCal punk, I heard Pearl Jam's Ten.

Pearl Jam opened a musical floodgate. I had no idea there was such great music being made in Seattle, which led me to bands like Hammerbox, the Gits, Zeke, Supersuckers, Seaweed, Critters Buggin', Nirvana, Screaming Trees, etc. These bands have a lot to do with where I am today.

Pearl Jam stood out, though. They possessed enormous talent, played well together, and featured a singer who actually had something to say. I found everything I could by Pearl Jam. Live records (including bootlegs), vinyl, a fan club where I got a 45 every year? This was my kind of band—not about fame or ego, but about their music and their fans.

Another great thing about Pearl Jam: They don't make the same record every time; they experiment, take chances, make mistakes, and, most importantly, have the balls to stand up for their beliefs.

Pearl Jam's members have side projects, yet there's nothing quite like what happens when they play together live. That's where they shine. Realizing that their fans were rabid about their live shows and attempting to curb bootleggers, Pearl Jam allowed fans to record them live. They also release several live CDs each tour to further combat bootlegging.

Pearl Jam have used their status to do good, including contributing to charities, taking on Ticketmaster over its dubious business practices, even planning an entire tour without using that service (which worked quite well). PJ took on MTV, ceasing to make videos for years, and they've stood steadfast in their political views on and off stage, adding tour dates in 2004 to help raise awareness for Vote for Change.

So, 14 fan-club singles (45s), almost 20 live shows, and close to 100 CDs later, I still love Pearl Jam. I thank them for opening that musical gate for me and for being a great band with chops, smarts, and balls. LISA WOOD

Lisa Wood is a KEXP DJ and blogs at http://www.lisawood.blogspot.com.

THE HATER

Pearl Jam are undoubtedly nice guys—they donate to Vera, they're pro-choice, and they try not to gouge their fans. But nice guys don't always make good art, and, consequently, Pearl Jam are an entirely unnecessary band.

Here's why:

1. Pearl Jam's one great contribution to the history of rock music has been a vocal style, popularized by Eddie Vedder, known as "yarling." This essentially makes Vedder and, by extension, Pearl Jam, culpable for such crimes against music as Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Staind, and many other "yarling" late-'90s grunge-lite acts.

2. Pearl Jam were never that good. A slightly above-average bar band that just happened to be in the right place at the right time, they were swept up as part of Seattle's great grunge hype and canonized alongside Nirvana and Soundgarden as some kind of Holy Trinity. But Pearl Jam possessed neither the transgressive punk sensibilities of Nirvana nor the giant, metallic awesomeness of Soundgarden. Instead, Pearl Jam produced a bland, digestible "alternative" music founded upon limp balladry, bloated arrangements, formulaic blues-rock grooves, and laughable lyrics made more painful by the aforementioned "yarling."

3. Pearl Jam have nothing interesting to say. Antiwar? Pro-choice? Fond of avocados? So is half the damn country, but you don't see us recording a million useless live "bootlegs" about it, do you?

If you like "yarling," weak ballads, and tame ideas, or if you're a preadolescent, then Pearl Jam are your band. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and listen to something new already. Grunge is over; let the dream die. ERIC GRANDY

Eric Grandy performs often as DJ FITS.

Pearl Jam is in a good place right now, says Gossard

The summer of 2006 has put Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard in an especially upbeat mood.

"I think we're in a great place right now," Gossard said by phone this week before the group's third San Francisco show at the Bill Graham Civic Arena.

"You never know how many days you have on the planet, you never know what's going to happen in the future. But we can be happy about what's going on right now. I'm optimistic about the future. We're going to make more records that are going to be cool and see more parts of the world and get involved in more issues we think are important."

Pearl Jam's current self-titled album, its first for Clive Davis' J Records, received some of the best reviews of the band's career. Setting aside the experimentation and moody introspection of its recent past, the band embraced a hard-rocking sound that comes straight from the heart.

"World Wide Suicide," the album's first single, was the highest-charting, fastest-rising single in the band's 16-year history. Its success helped build momentum for a North American tour that concludes this weekend with a pair of homecoming concerts at The Gorge. Each show will be "an evening with" Pearl Jam, sans opening act. But a brother-and-sister duo, Devereaux, perform at the Plaza Stage.

"We just feel so fortunate to have all this great energy in the room every night," Gossard said.

"I think we all feel that we're connected with each other and that we're feeling strong and have a great sense of camaraderie. And I think when that happens, we can go out and do something pretty special. That's what's going on right now. Some nights we really get it going on stage. I couldn't be happier with what's happening in the band and how people have been feeling and how the crowds have been."

Throughout the tour, Pearl Jam has donated $2 per ticket from each show to the Vitalogy Foundation, the band's charitable organization. Half of the money generated in each city has gone to a local grass-roots non-profit group, while the other half has been set aside for future giving.

But at The Gorge, all of the money from the $2-a-ticket allocation will be divided among three Seattle organizations -- the Vera Project, ArtsCorps and 826 Seattle, an organization that provides students from 6 to 18 with free access to writing workshops, publishing projects and one-on-one tutoring. The two concerts could raise more than $80,000.

Pearl Jam has established a long and admirable record of charitable giving. Earlier this month, the group pledged to donate $100,000 to nine organizations focusing on renewable energy, climate change and other environmental causes as part of its Carbon Portfolio Strategy. The campaign is designed to offset the carbon emissions and environmental damage that results from touring.

"It started after we began reflecting on our own business and how we'd like to see the world. Our hope is that the business would operate as responsibly and thoughtfully as possible," Gossard said.

Tonight at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the band will perform a sold-out benefit for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Guitarist Mike McCready, who suffers from Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, has performed a number of benefits for the Northwest chapter of the CCFA. But this will be the first to feature the entire band.

So what's next on the charitable front for Pearl Jam?

"I don't know how we can possibly have more things that we're involved with," Gossard said with a laugh. "It seems almost insane at this point."

"But it's very exciting because it all seems very natural. We've been working on a lot of this stuff for a long time. And it just continues."

This weekend's concerts mark the second summer in a row that Pearl Jam has played at The Gorge.

"It's a beautiful place. We love playing there," Gossard said. "We're awed by the cliffs and the beauty of that area, the Columbia River and the Eastern Washington landscape."

Anticipation is high for Pearl Jam's Gorge shows

Image

This is the big one. The rock concert of the summer.

Anytime Pearl Jam plays the Northwest, it's major. After all, it's the last band standing from the glory days of grunge, those few years in the late '80s and early '90s when Seattle was the center of the rock universe.

The band is sounding so good these days, it's almost like being back in that great time.

Pearl Jam has played the Gorge before but never like this. They're doing two shows this time, and there still may be some tickets available for Sunday (Saturday is sold out).

The shows come at the end of a triumphant North American tour, with the biggest crowds and best reviews in more than a decade. The tour is in support of "Pearl Jam," the band's eighth studio album and the first on J Records, Clive Davis' label.

Signing to a new label, and having Davis' considerable clout behind them, seems to have given the band a new sense of energy and purpose. "Pearl Jam" is the band's best album since the '90s, with sharper, more concise lyrics, inspired guitar solos and duos, and plenty of anthemic rock songs, Pearl Jam's strong suit.

The band has done more publicity for this recording than for any other, probably at Davis' insistence. They even got back to making a video, a practice they had abandoned long ago (however, the dark, foreboding, arty-smarty clip for "Life Wasted" is so murky it hardly gets any airplay).

Eddie Vedder also allowed a solo shot of him, the star of the band, to be used on the cover of Rolling Stone, rather than a group photo he used to require before granting magazine interviews. The band even did a VH1 "Storytellers" segment!

The positive reviews and all that publicity were expected to make "Pearl Jam" a big seller. But that hasn't panned out. After debuting ten weeks ago at No. 2 in Billboard, it's now down to No. 73. It hasn't even gone gold yet.

But ticket sales and chart positions have never meant much to Pearl Jam fans. That's because the group has done a masterful job of making its fans feel special, unique, part of an exclusive group. The band's Web site encourages that exclusivity. So does its huge, fee-based fan organization, Ten Club. Fan loyalty is a major reason why Pearl Jam remained a strong concert draw even while its record sales plummeted.

While the band risked alienating those core fans with its recent, unprecedented publicity blitz, shows like the ones at the Gorge this weekend should reinforce those rabid fans' loyalty. That's because the shows are not in some lifeless, barnlike arena but in the great outdoors, at one of the most beautiful concert sites in the world. And it's a hometown (well, close enough) show with no opening act.

That means a very long set — perhaps as much as three hours — from a revitalized, re-energized, rockin'-like-the-old-days Pearl Jam. Expect most of the "Pearl Jam" songs, most of the big hits, plenty of sing-alongs and nonstop dancing, onstage and in the audience. It promises to be one of the best Gorge shows ever.
