Salle: Pepsi Center
Première partie: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Nbre de spectateurs:
Membre(s) du PJforum présent(s): -

Setlist: World Wide Suicide, Severed Hand, Hail Hail, Do The Evolution, Given To Fly, Even Flow, Present Tense, Jeremy, Army Reserve, Daughter, Bee Girl, Corduroy (with guest keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers), Better Man/(Save It For Later [no vocals just music] with guest keyboardist Benmont Tench), Black (with guest keyboardist Benmont Tench)

Rappels: Comatose, Bu$hleaguer, Alive, So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star (by The Byrds. with guest guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench)

TFT Notes: Boom Gasper is absent at this show, returning to Hawaii after the passing of his mother. Tom Petty's keyboardist Benmont Tench sits in later in the show. Ed references being in Denver, the "Mile High City", saying that "I can just about guarantee you, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will take you even higher than that - we're just getting you off the ground." "Given To Fly" has the modified lyric "Made it to the mountains had a smoke in the tree." Before "Even Flow", Ed says that the song was written "by some friends of ours that were homeless up in Seattle when we were making our first record, and I read today that Denver has the fond privilege in being first in having the least homeless people in our country, and that's a tremendous achievement and thank you to the people in charge that made that happen - good on ya!". "Bee Girl" is played "for the little ones" and Ed explains that it was written with Jeff "with the assistance of a bottle of wine." After "Bee Girl", Ed introduces the Heartbreakers' keyboardist Benmont Tench: "It's with a heavy heart that I announce the absence of our B3 player and our partner ... and over the weekend he lost his mom, so he went back to the islands to take care of her. There's still a few songs we wanted to play and helping out we got a member of the other team - actually we're all on the same team, 'human beings' - and here's a great human being and as far as the keys go and the piano, probably one of the greatest players ever. Please welcome to play with us, Mr. Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers." Tench plays the B3 organ on "Corduroy" and "Better Man" and piano on "Black". "Better Man" even includes a solo by Tench, followed by a lone "Don't Let Me Down!!" by Ed. Pearl Jam breaks out "Bushleaguer" for the first time this tour, since the last time they were in Denver on April 1, 2003, there was a reported incident of fans leaving in protest to the song's playing. The performance is straightforard, nearly flawless and without comment. Ed does not play "Bushleaguer" with the George Bush mask. Ed thanks the fans after "Alive", "it's not just any time and it's not just anyone who can play for this many individuals, so from us as a group to you as invididuals, thanks so much to each and every one of you, it's not lost on us." The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench join Pearl Jam for the finale "So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star".

Article pre-concert:

A mature Pearl Jam makes the familiar sound new again

Image

Milestones matter, especially when you're talking about a seminal band such as Pearl Jam.

In July, the Seattle group's guitar player, Stone Gossard, will turn 40. And in August, the group's ground-shaking debut record, "Ten," will turn 15.

Pearl Jam always has welcomed change - with their fans' support - so it's no surprise the group is celebrating these milestones with a hot new record that has them sounding every bit as alive as when they started. The group also has embarked on a string of tour dates that brings it to Denver's Pepsi Center on Sunday and Monday, where they are opening for Tom Petty.

"I'm all right with it," Gossard said earlier this week of his upcoming birthday. "I feel lucky to be alive. I have some incredible friends and family and a lot of opportunities for happiness, so it's all cake. ... Life keeps unfolding, and I'm excited about what might be out there."

Gossard is one of the band's chief songwriters, musically responsible for eight of the 11 tracks on "Ten." He talks about his band's new eponymous record with similar animation.

"This record is going to represent something significant for us in the long run," he said. "It's tough to say now, but a record gets talked about, like how 'No Code' was talked about as a watershed moment - not commercial, but with people following us into an era that was new for us, a change, and for that to be OK and accepted. But there was even more of that going on in this record.

"From Ed's point of view, the record is just incredible, writing from the different perspectives he was able to take - but with a throughline. It was brought together as a broad spectrum of all these different characters and viewpoints. ... He has an incredible ability to inhabit a lot of different characters."

In the brief 2:19 of "Comatose," miniature guitar solo and all, singer Eddie Vedder paints a manic picture of chaos and love over the restless music of guitarists Gossard and Mike

McCready. Vedder is more playful in "Big Wave," but the imagery and metaphor are still thick in this miniature epic, replete with music by bassist Jeff Ament.

In the record's most-talked-about song, "World Wide Suicide," Vedder manages both lyrics and music with an expert sense of poetry, subtlety and flow. "It's a shame to awake in a world of pain/What does it mean when a war has taken over?/It's the same everyday and the wave won't break/Tell you to pray, while the Devil's on their shoulder/The whole world/World over/It's a worldwide suicide."

The sentiment of "Pearl Jam" is familiar. It's Vedder's agitated unrest, his authoritative storytelling and intelligent probing. But the music's familiarity is what makes it unique.

Only Pearl Jam, and a few other bands, could make familiarity sound so unusual. But this band has pushed and changed and experimented so much that its affinity for Neil Young is obvious just in charting the musical progression of its records. There was always a backbone that was distinctively Vedder and Gossard, but the formula had changed, morphed rather, so that it was never a traditional formula.

"Every year, you choose to take it more seriously and feel more connected with your path and where you're going and what's in front of you," said Gossard. "Ed just continues to take his excitement and responsibility, in terms of his own art, to another level. He enjoys it more, and the more he puts into it, the more he gets out of it. And I see him not getting lazy with it because he's passionate about what he does."
Only then comes "Pearl Jam," released in May, and suddenly you're taken back 15 years. The distinct post-grunge melodies are there - the hard rock that is more listenable than investigational - and the accessible set is every bit as good as "Ten," if not a bit better and more mature.

Pearl Jam doesn't sound old, here. It sounds relevant - and rejuvenated.

But as experienced as the members are, Pearl Jam is not on automatic pilot. Making records is still a collaborative and sometimes dangerous process for the band - so much so that Gos-

sard, one of the industry's most revered rhythm guitarists, is taking a stab at some lead work.

"Every once in a while I'll take some leads," he said. "I'm trying to wrap my head around lead guitar a little bit more. Sometimes I'm trying to figure out, 'Oh my God, what am I gonna do in this spot?' And that's not that attitude you wanna go into your lead with, but I have to admit, that happens."

Like playing lead, making a record is also an improvisational art. And the result with "Pearl Jam," a record adorned with a subtle blue cover featuring a halved avocado, was surprisingly political.

"Ed might have had an inkling about what he wanted to speak about," Gossard said, "but there were 25 ideas, and some of them were political, and many of them weren't, but toward the end it really narrowed down, and this is what we came up with.

"That's the fun part of making records, that you begin to collaborate with each other and write songs and battle it out and figure out how to get certain things done, but in the end, like editing a newspaper, what you decide goes on the front page of each section makes a significant impact in the way it's all perceived.

"So much of music is editing. This fits, this doesn't. But we think this fits."

Vital Pearl Jam refuses to become irrelevant

Image

Pearl Jam is at the point in its career where 90 percent of bands phone it in, both on disc and in concert; they become hopelessly irrelevant.
But this is all about beating the odds. More than a decade and a half into its career, Pearl Jam is not just intact but flourishing, releasing one of its finest albums and shaking fans to the core with a too-short but transcendent set at the Pepsi Center on Sunday night.

It's a brilliant concert pairing. Pearl Jam has teamed up with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers for part of the latter's summer tour; tonight is the last night the two will play together. It combines two groups known for the best songwriting in the modern rock era and two bands that play with a sixth sense about where each musician is going.

Most opening bands don't get anywhere near the 90 minutes Pearl Jam took to thoroughly invigorate the crowd, but some fans are disappointed that they're unable to do the longer sets they're used to.

Opening with a searing version of its new antiwar single World Wide Suicide, Pearl Jam decided to make up for the shorter show with a stunning set list. Bee Girl, a rarity from years ago, showed up among huge greatest hits, including the closing killer trio of Corduroy, Better Man and Black with Heartbreaker Benmont Tench sitting in on keyboards.

The tight playing comes from being intact from the start as a band (though a rotating drummer's seat was eventually filled perfectly by Matt Cameron). All are amazing players, but guitarist Mike McCready gets special props for going from an adequate guitarist to an inspiring one, with solos worthy of some of the best players in rock 'n' roll.

The new album, simply titled Pearl Jam, is global and personal at the same time. What few selections were played had fans singing along like the hits did; one regrets that great tracks such as Life Wasted and Gone couldn't be included.

The encore had a crowd sing-along on Alive and the return of Tench, this time with Heartbreaker guitarist Mike Campbell, for a pounding yet lithe version of The Byrds' So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star.

It's likely the most talented lineup of musicians this crowd has seen on a stage ever - and it was about to get better with the second half of the show.

Pearl Jam

• When and where: Sunday night, Pepsi Center

• Grade: A

• Of note: Pearl Jam is on a double bill with Tom Petty; the final show is tonight, with tickets still available. Petty's set started too late for print deadlines; a full review is available now at RockyMountainNews.com and will be in Tuesday's print edition.

Stand up for Tom Petty, Pearl Jam

Staring out at the thick crowd swarming through Denver’s Pepsi Center Sunday, one had to wonder: Who are these people here to see?

There is such a thing as a natural double-bill, but it seemed unlikely that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam shared that many fans.

Guess the old adage about assumptions is right. The crowd went wild for both acts, though Petty was clearly the star. He looked every bit the icon in a slightly undone red button-down, a loose polka-dotneck tie, and a crushed velvet jacket. To the crowd’s delight, he wriggled around the stage, theatrically directed the band, and stood with arms widestretched,
chest puffed out, absorbing the crowd’s adoration. It’s the 30th anniversary of the band, so why shouldn’t Petty bask in it a little?

The air in the crowd smelled of beer and sweat as Petty took command of “I Won’t Back Down.” All around, people chanted along. Part of the fun of Petty is that everyone knows the words.

When Petty sang “Free Fallin,’” hordes of people stood with their eyes squinted shut, doing their darnedest to hold that long note on “free.”

Petty was kind enough to yield the mic to Eddie Vedder who sang a capable version of “The Waiting.”

“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” settled well with the younger people in the crowd, while “Learning to Fly” was a little moment of magic. Petty’s voice settled into the softness of the tune, and the muted chant of the crowd complemented his gentle emotion and acoustic guitar. “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” had the audience adding “hey!” and “stop!” when appropriate, while “Refugee” inspired full-blown hollers.

The Heartbreakers’ music is a little invention, and a little borrowing, but there’s no denying Petty is good at mixing his influences into an intoxicating brew. Petty’s songs stick.

Pearl Jam started off the night slowly, playing some less popular material while fans filed into their seats. But singer Eddie Vedder soon had folks on their feet and chanting along to a jammed out “Evenflow.”

The band’s classic catalogue — songs like “Black,” “Alive,” and “Jeremy” — still resonated with the crowd, but newer material didn’t have the same effect. Like many intensely popular and innovative bands, Pearl Jam is firmly tethered to a certain period of time. Even so, Vedder and his band poured passion into their grunge standards.

Ed was switched from tea to wine throughout the night and at one point he came over and poured some wine into my mom and some other people's empty glasses. He did it at the end of the show too. During Even Flow Ed said that he had read that Denver had one of the lowest homeless rates and how he was impressed by that. Army Reserve is one of my favorite new songs so I was glad they played it. Ed toasted the troops before playing it and someone threw a huge wad of money on stage that Ed gathered at the end of the song and said "thank you." Bee Girl and Bushleaguer were interesting surprises and at one point Ed pretended to pull the mask out of his pocket but got a big smile on his face and shook his head no. He did not say anything about the song before or after they just played it. Black was beautiful with Ed singing the "duh duh do duh do" and the end which I don't think you hear much. I was very suprised we got an encore. Ed also annouced that Boom's mother had passed away a couple days ago he went back home for the funeral.
Ed came out with Petty and sang the first 2 verses of The Waiting and dedicated it to Jill. I saw her rocking out on Stone's side of the stage.
He came out again with Petty for American Girl and shredded the tamborines. It was pretty cool.

Bee Girl! Ed and Jeff inserted this little playful gem right into the center of the set, completely unexpectedly. It's from early in their career, a ditty dedicated to that rotund little girl in the bee costume from the Blind Melon "No Rain" video & album cover and almost never played. What a treat. I have almost all of it (not the first line, I wasn't quick enough with the little buttons) here on video:
[swf]http://www.youtube.com/v/IWJ37M1fT00[/swf]

Corduroy is such a fabulous song to sing along to at the top of your lungs at a live show, I was very pleased that they included it ("The waiting drove me mad / You're finally here and I'm a mess"). Hail, Hail peeled paint (when they launched into that opening riff, I got chills) and Comatose was scathingly good. Army Reserve was a surprise, especially the heartfelt dedication in which Ed thanked all the soliders serving overseas and omitted any snarky political comments (although I suppose he made up for it in Bu$hleaguer).

PJ keyboardist Boom Gaspar didn't play last night due to a funeral he was attending, so Benmont Tench from The Heartbreakers filled in for him on Corduroy and Black. He added some really rich piano filler to Black, it made it stand out for me in a way that it usually doesn't. (And after the show we were walking to our car and I found myself face to face with him through the glass of a hotel bar window. I stopped, smiled, and gave him two thumbs up. Hey, I never claimed to be cool on-the-spot.)

For the last song, So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star, Pearl Jam was joined by Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. This was a great song to see since it has only been played three times live EVER by Pearl Jam, the first being the November 6, 1995 show in San Diego that I was at! Although at that time I remember them doing it more hauntingly and acoustic, whereas last night R'N'R Star was a rocker. Very, very cool.
[swf]http://www.youtube.com/v/6eFR4gcWK1w[/swf]

Once Petty got going with his own unique laid-back brand of showmanship and the big screens started flashing behind him, I quite enjoyed myself, although inside I was secretly biding the minutes until Vedder decided to join him. And join him he did, for a mid-set performance of The Waiting (video clip below) and an hugely good-natured and smile-filled duet for the last song of the night, American Girl - which left me with another ear-to-ear grin on my face as we filed out.
