PEARL JAM, "#68 JULY 11, 2003, MANSFIELD, MA."
Early in the set, Eddie Vedder raises a toast to "Boston Night 3," and this ferocious live bootleg makes you want to hoist a pint in your living room with him. On either a whim, dare, drunken bet, whatever, Pearl Jam committed to performing every song from its decade-old catalog during three nights in Boston a few weeks back, and this three-disc collection captures the blowout finale.
And though the band fell about a dozen songs short of its goal, it wasn't for a lack of effort. On this night, it materialized for an hourlong acoustic pre-set before the opening act, then re- emerged for an almost three-hour rock portion afterward. The acoustic sampler was a treat in itself, boasting the ultra-rare "All Those Yesterdays," the folkish ditty "Driftin'," and the gorgeous "Thin Air."
But the electric set sported too many rarities to count: "Why Go," "Faithfull," "Breath." And it wrapped up with an all-covers encore that careened from the Ramones' "I Believe in Miracles" to the Clash's "Know Your Rights" to CCR's "Fortunate Son."
Total song count: 45. And you can't beat the price: $14.98 for three discs, less if you're a PJ fan-club member. Pearl Jam may be scoring a fraction of its "Ten" and "Vs."-era sales these days, but documents like these show how the band remains an enduring, often raging live force.
