Eddie Vedder et Ben Harper, probablement les deux chanteurs les plus charismatiques qu'il puisse exister!

Perso, je ne trouve pas que "no more war" etait approprié pour la voix de Ben Harper....Par contre pour la cause tout a fait.....

Lollapalooza closes with great 'Jam'

Fireworks sailed over the heads of Pearl Jam Sunday as a picture-perfect ending to Lollapalooza, the three-day music festival that brought tens of thousands of people to Chicago's lakefront.

"As a young man who spent a lot of time riding on the El train listening to bands like Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, a deep honor comes with playing here tonight," said Eddie Vedder, a North Shore native, of his festival fellows. Pearl Jam played a nearly two-hour set, reaching fans from Hutchinson Field south to Buckingham Fountain far in the north.

Lollapalooza is in its third year as a destination festival and a recent agreement with the Chicago Park District guarantees its August arrival in Grant Park for the next four years. No doubt the festival more or less exists as a brand name for Austin, Texas producers C3 Presents and, like most mass-scale gatherings, it provides ample marketing potential, which was in full swing all weekend, considering the endless corporate sponsorships, VIP suites and wine bar.

But is Lollapalooza the artistically vibrant enterprise it was back in the 1990s when it launched the careers of a new generation of bands and celebrated the appeal of counterculture art and fashion?

Likely no. Concertgoers (a specific number of whom was not provided by festival organizers) who could afford the high-ticketed admission were not challenged as they were back then, but were instead treated to some singular moments that are likely to last in the memory for a long time.

Eddie Vedder's band, Pearl Jam, closed out Lollapalooza's third year at Grant Park in Chicago.

Many of these took place Sunday. Motor City punk godfather Iggy Pop seized the day by turning into a one-man firebrand, wiggling, jumping and thrusting himself across the stage. Joined by the reunited Stooges, he played new songs but ignited the crowd with boogie-punk classics like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "1969."

Then, in a moment that is likely not to be forgotten, he invited concertgoers onstage. A melee broke out and about 200 people rushed up, creating a spectacle that teetered between dangerous and thrilling.

Eventually the stage was cleared, but seeing Pop kissed, caressed and excessively manhandled by adoring kids was a spontaneous highlight of a festival that didn't have many.

My Morning Jacket played a set of grand, sweet, Southern guitar rock while joined by members of the Chicago Youth Orchestra. The idea didn't seem essential to the music until the end when the dramatic arrangement of the symphonic players rose to fill up the wide-open spaces created by the band.

An informal Chicago tribute came in the form of covering "Move On Up," by hometown soul music icon Curtis Mayfield.

The ringmaster of Lollapalooza continues to be Perry Farrell, who popped up on stages introducing bands and, curiously enough, was caught on the kids stage playing a set of music to children including Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," and later, backed by a band of junior high kids from the local chapter of School of Rock, a rendition of "Summertime Rolls," by his former band Jane's Addiction.

The greatest anticipation and also the greatest disappointment was Amy Winehouse.

The bee-hived British soul singer and tabloid played a stage ten times the size of her music, tasteful and meticulously arranged 1960's soul. Her trademark hair rarely rustled as Winehouse remained locked in place, at times mumbling lyrics.

She is this year's biggest success story but on that hot Sunday afternoon, she burnt out.

If I can ask one thing when I am dead
would you lay me down by the river bed?
let me wash away
let it take me back from where I came
all I am and all I was is just
blood and dirt and bones and mud
and I'm better off that way
I'm better off that way

Pearl Jam Brings It All Back Home To Close Lollapalooza

Playing its s most watched U.S. show in a decade, Pearl Jam closed the 2007 edition of Lollapalooza on a political note, bringing injured Iraq War soldier Thomas Young on stage to urge the audience to rededicate itself to ending the conflict in the Middle East. The two-hour-plus set concluded with a stage full of friends (including Ben Harper) and fans flanking Pearl Jam for a ferocious cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."

Pearl Jam, who has largely eschewed festival performances since nine fans were crushed to death during its set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in 2000, leaned heavily on its time-tested hits, galvanizing the capacity crowd with renditions of "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Better Man" and "Alive." Frontman Eddie Vedder, who grew up in nearby Evanston, made clear the band's appreciation for the occasion, telling the audience, "There's a deep amount of meaning that comes with playing on this stage tonight."

My Morning Jacket teed up the crowd for Pearl Jam's performance by playing most of its set with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. The teenage musicians gave extra sonic girth to tracks like "Gideon," "Dondante," "Just One Thing" and "Wordless Chorus," while the band itself, decked out in tuxedos, excelled on classic rock-inspired cuts like "One Big Holiday," opener "Anytime" and the reggae-tinged "Off the Record." The set closed with a cover of Curtis Mayfield's classic "Move on Up."

Earlier in the day, Vedder joined Kings Of Leon on their closing number, "Slow Night, So Long," singing with frontman Caleb Followill and bashing two tambourines together. The Tennessee group rocked through a set featuring tracks like "Molly's Chambers," "On Call," "The Bucket" and "Razz," more than translating the Southern-soaked rock'n'roll of its three studio albums to a sizable festival crowd.

Pearl Jam’s Fierce, Political Headlining Set Brings Lollapalooza 2007 to a Fitting End

...

Pearl Jam brings the festival full circle. Fifteen years ago, the quintet played a daytime slot on the second Lollapalooza while they were on their way to temporarily becoming the biggest band in the world. Now, in their only major North American concert appearance of the year, the Seattle crew is digging deep into a rich back catalog as belles of the ball. “There’s a deep amount of meaning that comes with playing this stage tonight,” reveals Eddie Vedder, regaling the crowd with tales of his youth spent in the north suburb of Evanston.

Tonight, the always dependable Pearl Jam are on fire. “Corduroy,” “Do the Evolution,” and “Given to Fly” lead the parade of hits while “Why?” “State of Love and Trust,” “Rearviewmirror” and “World Wide Suicide” provide clenched-teeth release. Select covers — Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2” included — please the faithful. Bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard face-off and challenge another, and Vedder assumes his typical fight-the-good-fight stance, railing against petroleum company BP Amoco, which is planning to dump toxic chemicals into Lake Michigan under the guise of expansion. Pearl Jam even slapped together a brief punk-ish ditty, “Don’t Go to BP Amoco,” to spread the message. “Evenflow” meanders into a jam before detouring into a Matt Cameron drum solo, which, coincidentally, coincides with fireworks exploding in the background over the Field Museum. Strangely, it works as if exactly to plan, and makes sense for where Pearl Jam are now at in their career — and for what Lollapalooza currently represents as a festival.
