VEDDER JOINS X STARS AT INAUGURAL PARTY

PEARL JAM star EDDIE VEDDER stunned BARACK OBAMA fans at an Inauguration Day party in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday night (20Jan09) when he stepped up onstage to perform with punk icons JOHN DOE and EXENE CERVENKA.
Vedder and bandmates Jeff Ament and Mike MCCready had managed to blend in with the crowd at the packed Tractor Tavern club when Doe called the Alive singer up onstage.
Keeping a low profile in a black hat, he duetted with Cervenka on a rendition of X’s fan favourite The New World, and then used Doe's torso as a drum for another tune.
As he left the stage, Doe joked, "Thank you, man in the black hat."

Eddie Vedder Joins John Doe and Exene Cervenka’s Knitters to Party for Obama in Seattle

The country’s best inauguration party Tuesday night turned out to be in the other Washington: At Seattle’s tiny Tractor Tavern club, the Knitters (the rootsy side band led by X’s John Doe and Exene Cervenka) played a Americana-soaked barnstormer of a show — complete with a guest appearance by Eddie Vedder. “Whenever anyone’s being a cynic and an asshole, saying it’s just gonna be the same old thing, do me a favor and tell ‘em to fuck off,” Doe told the crowd, in one of the evening’s many happy references to the day’s events. Then he invited Vedder onstage to duet with Cervenka on a gleefully frenzied version of X’s 1983 tune “The New World,” with its sardonic lyrics about another election: “It was better before they voted for what’s his name.”

Vedder, who had managed to blend in to the crowd (which also included his Pearl Jam bandmates Jeff Ament and Mike McCready) with his hair tucked into a big black knit cap, was in a mood to celebrate: He pounded out the beat on Doe’s back with his fists, slow-danced with Cervenka, and played air guitar while the Knitters’ Dave Alvin (formerly of the Blasters) finished the song with a lengthy solo that incorporated both Chuck Berry licks and what sounded like part of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” “Thank you, man in the black hat,” Doe said.

Pearl Jam star lobbies for restroom access

Image
In this photo released by the Washington State House of Representatives, Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready testifies before a legislative committee Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, in Olympia, Wash.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - As the lead guitarist for Seattle rock band Pearl Jam, Mike McCready has toured the world, won a Grammy and performed with the Rolling Stones.

But as McCready knows, there are some things fame can't get you. And sometimes, that means getting to a restroom in time.

McCready suffers from Crohn's disease, a painful gastrointestinal disorder that can make finding restrooms an extremely urgent and embarrassing task. On Thursday, he asked Washington state legislators to mandate emergency access to businesses' private restrooms for sufferers of Crohn's and related disorders.

"Imagine the worst diarrhea you've ever had and then times it by 10, with a knife in it," McCready said after testifying before a legislative committee.

"You have maybe a half-a-second to find out where a bathroom is."

The proposal would require retailers without public restrooms to allow people with inflammatory bowel diseases to use employee restrooms, provided an identification card or a letter from a doctor or nurse is shown.

There would be some exceptions for small businesses but if the bill becomes law, those who refuse to open up their restrooms to qualified people could eventually be fined $100.

Illinois, Michigan and Texas have passed similar laws.

The bill's sponsor, state Representative Marko Liias, said the idea came from a constituent with Crohn's disease.

"In general, as a society, we are loath to talk about the restroom and going to the restroom," Liias said.

"For many people, the simple act of going to the restroom can be an excruciating experience."

Pearl Jam made its name in the early 1990s, part of an explosion of grunge rock acts that helped put Seattle on the map.

The band also is known for publicly fighting ticket-sales giant Ticketmaster but McCready said he was still nervous testifying at the state House judiciary committee.

Officials from bank and restaurant associations raised some concerns about the proposed law.

Washington Restaurant Association lobbyist Michael Transue said allowing members of the public with inflammatory bowel diseases to use employee restrooms could create safety issues, particularly if they had to travel through busy kitchens during peak business hours.

"We're very sympathetic to the issue presented," Transue said.

"To allow folks in these situations to use our employee restrooms is the humane and compassionate thing to do...that said, imposing mandatory requirements" is not fair to businesses.

McCready said a law is needed because many businesses are insensitive to the needs of people who have diseases like Crohn's. He said there are a number of businesses he won't patronize because they've denied him emergency restroom access.

Over the last 20 years he estimates he's had "hundreds" of accidents. But while Crohn's disease has been a public embarrassment for him, he said officials should remember the everyday people who suffer with similar disorders.

"I'm 42 years old. I'm doing fine," he said.

"But when you're 13 or 14 and you're going through those years with the shame and indignation - it's embarrassing."

House judiciary committee chairman Jamie Pedersen said the bill will likely be passed out of his committee.

Pearl Jam has supported our dreams from the very beginning to raise $1 million and climb Kilimanjaro in February 2009. They are helping us spread the word about Huntington's Disease by contributing to our fundraiser.

Eddie Vedder and the new face of America

Here are two things I never expected to hear: (1) “As your financial adviser, I won’t be charging you any management fees this year because your portfolio went down and I blame myself.” And (2) “I have Eddie Vedder on the phone for you.”

I’m still paying management fees on my RRSP. Eddie, on the other hand, was, in fact, on the phone from somewhere in Seattle. And despite his well-documented, er, reserve, the Pearl Jam frontman sounded, well, rather verklempt — in a good way. So how is he doing, following the inaugural of U.S. President Barack Obama?

“I’m OK. I’m beyond OK. I’m great. I’m so overwhelmed and overcome with emotion ... I feel incredible, I feel relieved, I feel exhausted.”

So what kind of hopes and predictions does he now have, I ask.

“Two years ago, you were wondering what could there possibly be to unite our country and get us out of this mess. What can get us back on the positive? What can bring us back into some kind of standing with the international community? And it seemed like that there would not be any answer. Who knew we would get to this moment?”

Maybe Barack Obama’s greatest contribution is simply going to be the re-ignition of hope, he suggests.

“So now it’s up to us to keep that candle, turn that into a flame and keep it burning. And to protect and serve him and serve our nation now that the electorate has been invigorated.”

We had our own federal election in October and the turnout and interest was low. However, hundreds of Canadians travelled to Washington to take part in American history.

“Wow. Well, you know, we are connected — more than just geographically. Our cultures are very similar and when one goes down, the other is going to follow in certain ways.”

Eddie and I talked about everything from the upcoming reissue of Pearl Jam’s Ten album (due March 24) to any lingering bad feelings towards Ticketmaster.

But here was my big question: How did Eddie come to cover a Canadian song for the Into the Wild soundtrack? The answer next week.

McCready appeared on Seattle's 97.3 FM Kiro radio for a phone interview and said that Pearl Jam are currently working on 18/19 songs. The band's new album is likely to be released in late summer 2009, so the guitar player stated.
