Howard Zinn's 'History' comes to TV
Documentary miniseries to feature Damon, Vedder
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

Production is finally set to begin on a long-delayed TV version of Howard Zinn's landmark 1980 tome "A People's History of the United States."
The four-hour documentary miniseries -- titled "The People Speak" -- will include performances by Matt Damon, Marisa Tomei, Viggo Mortensen, Danny Glover, Josh Brolin, David Strathairn, Kerry Washington, Eddie Vedder and John Legend.

Zinn will host the longform project, which begins shooting next month in Boston. Project, to be exec produced by Zinn, Anthony Arnove and First Tuesday Media's Chris Moore, has not yet been sold to a network.

Damon and Moore have been looking to adapt "A People's History of the United States" on television for nearly a decade.

Damon, who lived next door to Zinn as a child, and Ben Affleck included a reference to Zinn and "A People's History" in their Academy Award-winning "Good Will Hunting." Soon thereafter, the scribes and Moore (also a "Good Will Hunting" producer) sold a 10- to 12-hour miniseries to Fox based on the book.

"A People's History" was slated to run on Fox in 1999, but that didn't happen; later, HBO developed a three-part version but eventually passed as well.

The new adaptation will draw from both "A People's History," and sequel tome "Voices of A People's History of the United States," which Zinn wrote with Arnove. Miniseries will center on the actors and musicians as they read from the books or perform music related to their themes: the struggles of women, war, class and race.

The longform will mix the performances with photos, interviews and archival footage.

"This project is about Howard Zinn, his books and using that body of work to remind and inspire us all that this is a country built on dissidence," Moore said. "Howard's work deserves to be on film, and it is time that we paid tribute and captured the struggles of the people."

Zinn, whose books chronicle the struggles of Native Americans, women, workers and other Americans, said he'd like to continue to inspire activists.

"Our hope is that these words from the past will speak passionately and clearly to the needs of the present," he said.

Cinetic Media is handling domestic sales for "The People Speak," which is also being readied for a DVD release after its initial TV run. Artfire Films' Art Spigel, Ara Katz and Dan Fireman are on board as producers; David Baerwald will provide the music score.

Matt Damon, Eddie Vedder et Viggo Mortensen s'intéressent à l'histoire

Plusieurs célébrités vont participer à une mini série documentaire inspirée du livre de l'historien Howard Zinn intitulé «A People's History of the United States» (1980).

Celui-ci s'inspire également du livre «Voices of a People's History of the United States» coécrit par Zinn et Anthony Arnove.

La production devrait débuter en janvier à Boston. Pour le moment, on ne sait pas encore quelle chaîne diffusera l'émission.

The producer said filming will continue May 1 at the Malibu Performing Arts Center in California with readings by Sean Penn ("Mystic River") and Don Cheadle ("Crash") and a performance by Eddie Vedder, lead singer of the alt-rock band Pearl Jam.

Eddie Vedder rips into state of the U.S. at Malibu

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/ne ... 6222.story

Eddie Vedder reached into the deep songbook of American protest on Thursday night and pulled out a 4-decade-old civil rights polemic, the Phil Ochs song "Here's to the State of Mississippi," which the Pearl Jam singer changed lyrically into an attack on the current presidential administration:

Here's to the land you tore out the heart of,

George W. find yourself another country to be part of. . . .

Vedder had searing intensity while he was singing, but he deflated a bit when he was done. "I can't wait until we don't have to sing these songs anymore," the rock star told the decidedly partisan crowd gathered at the Malibu Performing Arts Center.

Vedder's mix of reflection, anger and dejection encapsulated much of the mood of the evening's program, a taping of "The People Speak," an ongoing series of spoken-word and music performances that will be shaped into a documentary film of the same name.

The stage events, which began in Boston in January, are inspired by Howard Zinn's 1980 book, "A People's History of the United States," and, like that book, the words from the stage are from primary historical documents, such as a letter that a freed slave sent to his former owner. The film, which will weave the spartan stage presentations with other footage, is to be released this fall.

The readings Thursday were done by Hollywood notables Sean Penn, Sandra Oh, Benjamin Bratt, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck and Rosario Dawson, and Josh Brolin was the host. The crowd was dotted with celebrities as well, among them Barbra Streisand, Diane Lane and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The readings were intense, but music propelled the evening. A bearded Jackson Browne sang a coiled version of his 1986 track "Lives in the Balance," and the Robinson brothers of Black Crowes fame chose "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The earthy set by bluesman Taj Mahal was the only truly buoyant moment with "Baby Please Don't Go."

John Doe and Exene Cervenka of the seminal L.A. punk band X performed their classic "The New World" with its line: "It was better before / before they voted for what's-his-name." Afterward, Doe, like Vedder, seemed to wonder when the old songs of the left would stop feeling so right for the moment. "That was a song written for Ronald Reagan . . . that's the bad part."

Viggo Mortensen and Eddie Vedder sing the revolution on a hot PDX night

http://www.oregonlive.com/entertainment ... _vedd.html

Friday night, the line outside First Baptist Church in downtown Portland stretched around the block. The still-blazing sun, on a day of record heat, blasted early birds as they waited for the doors to open at 7:15 p.m. In the crowd were children, teens, teachers, students, silver hairs, and babes in arms. Many wore tank tops, sleeveless shifts or shorts, revealing tender flesh abruptly liberated from winter layers, now reddened and sweating.

...

Then, Vedder went to the front of the church, sat on a chair, picked up a guitar and, after stopping twice to collect his emotions, devoted his song, "The Long Road" to Roslyn Zinn. "Without you," Vedder sang, "something's missing...Now I wish for you again/And the wind keeps blowin'/And the sky keeps turning gray/And the sun is set..."

When Vedder finished, the crowd -- some in tears -- applauded vigorously and went back into the hot Portland night.

Pearl Jam makes surprise visit to Atlanta Film Festival

Pearl Jam, a rock band born from the ’90s “grunge” movement, made a surprise visit Thursday to opening night of the Atlanta Film Festival.

The quintet made a low-key entrance to the festival — avoiding the red carpet — to see lead singer Eddie Vedder’s appearance in the Tony Sacco film, “The People Speak,” festival executive director Gabriel Wardell said.

The film, based on writings by Howard Zinn, features a cast of celebrities reading letters and memoirs by people who spoke up for their rights.

“One thing about this film, and seeing it tonight, you can’t help but be inspired by these people who fought and died for their rights,” Vedder said.

Actors Josh Brolin and Jasmine Guy and rocker Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes also appear in the film and attended the festival’s opening night.

The group debuted in 1991 with the chart-topping album “Ten,” and followed with consecutive Billboard No. 1 albums “Vs.,” “Vitalogy,” and “No Code.”

Pearl Jam won their only Grammy in 1995 for the record “Spin the Black Circle.”

Wardell said the group was in town making a new album with Atlanta producer Brendan O’Brien, the mastermind behind several of Pearl Jam’s hit albums and Bruce Springstein’s Grammy-winning Best Rock album “The Rising,” and latest work, “Working on a Dream.”
