Unbelievable show. They were as tight as I have ever seen them, and Mike was running all over the place like a madman. I think the only flub they made all show was Ediie messing up a few lines of Parachutes right in the middle and he had to stop singing for maybe 3 bars, other than that the show was musically PERFECT. Nice "we belong together" tag on Black as well.
These two nights were the most energetic crowds I've ever seen at a show. Gotta be honest, I was at Boston Night 3 in '03 (the pre-show acoustic set, etc.), and as great as that show was for the diehards, most of the people didn't seem to know what to do with themselves. I lost my shit when Ed started to sing "Arc," but everyone within fifty feet of me just stared at the stage like a dog that's been shown a card trick. On other songs, too, the crowd seemed lackluster.
Tonight, though ... there must have been a lot of Ten Clubbers in the audience, because when they started to play Leash the whole crowd erupted. Fists and hands in the air the whole time - the entire place went nuts. I don't know if knowledgable fans were telling people that they haven't played it in 11 years, but anyway, like I said the place went nuts. Also, Ed had this huge smile on his face looking out into the crowd right before they started playing it. Personally, I like the song and everything but I'm almost kind of disappointed the streak is over. I never care about them playing certain songs, really ... I just like being at every show I can, because every one is a unique experience, regardless of the setlist.
Ed started running around during the second encore - just before they played Smile, he said it was a request from someone in the third row. And they brought this little girl, pulled from the third row, on to the stage ... I couldn't really hear her name, but she handed Ed a bouquet of flowers and then they played Smile. Ed continued running around between the next two songs, saying things to the other guys, leading to "Indifference" (which was great) and "Leash."
Anyway, what else can I say ... great version of I Got Shit, buy the bootleg just for that ... Parachutes continues to grow on me, and it was pretty good live - very pretty, but it definitely swings the momentum. Comatose is quickly becoming one of my favorite live songs, just to whip the crowd up ... My Morning Jacket with Ed was really good, I'm starting to get into Jacket only after seeing them three times so far on this tour ... the pre-set acoustic Porch might have been the highlight for me.
Highlight of the first night - I was sitting behind the stage (long story, but I didn't get fan club tickets to that show) and so I brought a sign that read "Best Seats in The House - Matt Cam!" Matt pointed to me at the end of the show and then threw his drumsticks right at me ... of course, the dude in the seat directly in front of me caught the drumstick. Crap!
I hope those of you who really want to hear Leash get to, and as for the rest of you, bring that energy! The guys seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage, and the fans have been feeding off that, and thus the cycle continues. Oh, and somebody start a "Jeff!" or "A-Ment!" chant for me. I tried to get one going after he played the lead guitar on Smile, but I couldn't quite get one going. Since this was probably my last show for the tour, I'm wicked jealous of the rest of you who will be seeing them in the coming weeks. Have fun!
Just a few points from the show:
BLACK: best version I have heard to date .. "do do do do" (or whatever) Crowd chorus at the end was incredible, and into the "we belong toegether"
LEASH: Hey not a huge fan of the song or anything..... but it was amazing to see it played due to the long wait. At the end Eddie just raised his hands above his head and to his sides while shrugging his shoulders; as to say " ok there you go, happy?", just something I was glad to be a part of
RITFW: Theo on stage playing (not sure it was actually plugged in)... No big deal: but being a sox fan seeing the GM playing on stage with Pearl Jam, pretty fucking cool
OVERALL just an amazing two nights.... now I wait until Denver
