Soundcheck: Parachutes, Leash, Parting Ways, Push Me Pull Me

Ed Solo: Dead Man, I Can't Explain (avec MMJ???)

Setlist: Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, Given To Fly, World Wide Suicide, Life Wasted, Severed Hand, Sad, Marker In The Sand, Red Mosquito, Even Flow, Love Boat Captain, Corduroy, Daughter/(Blitzkrieg Bop)/(I Believe In Miracles), Army Reserve, Green Disease, Why Go, Inside Job, Rearviewmirror

Encore 2: Do The Evolution, Comatose, Satan's Bed, Leatherman, Blood, Baba O'Riley, Yellow Ledbetter/(Spangled Banner Tag)

TFT Notes: "Yeah, we're getting it going" Ed says to the energetic crowd to the crowd of about 12,000. "Daughter" is introduced as "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and there's a considerable gasp from some in the crowd. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is a Gordon Lightfoot song about a real-life freighter that sank between Wisconsin and Michigan, but also a song often associated (incorrectly?) with an instrumental song on one of Stone Gossard's early 1990 demos. As "Daughter" starts though, Ed says to the crowd "Don't hate me." Ed introduces Boom and says he's standing in front of what looks like a "portable bar" and says "Love Boat Captain" was written in a "far away place and far enough away that anything seemed possible". Ed mentions the last time they played Grand Rapids was the "Vote For Change" tour and says the name of that tour was supposed to "make the point" and that "Vote for Change" was maybe "not explanatory enough because some people didn't figure out you were voting to change things for the better." He continues, "So a lot of us voted, but things have changed just for the worse and something hopeful, apparently there's a couple of veterans in the crowd and we have their support so we're very proud of that.", leading to "Army Reserve". Jeff updates everyone on the Detroit vs. Cleveland playoff basketball game that night "We just found out that the Pistons won by two points", to large cheers. Ed then says he heard they actually lost by three points, to large boos. Ed then asks the crowd to vote for who they think the liar is, but he admits "it's gonna be me". During the "Rearviewmirror" jam, Ed sings "Time heals the wounds that no one can see (repeated) / I will forget, I will forgive (repeated)". With the crowd going nuts, Ed comes on after the first encore saying "Are you kidding me? We're not gonna want to leave this place. And I thought we had friends in Chicago!". The first encore is full of "experimenting" and Ed clarifies that "there's a big difference between 'experimenting with you' and 'fucking with you', we're not going to fuck with you." Before "Around the Bend", Ed asks, "Would you like to hear 'Around the Bend'? We can try it. Are you sure? We haven't played it, we haven't practiced it, so we're fucking with ourselves at this point." Pearl Jam plays back-to-back breakouts with "Around the Bend" and "Parting Ways", both the only times played this leg. "Parting Ways" includes a sitar-like guitar effect which gives the main riff a different sound. A 10-minute "Crazy Mary" ends with Mike and Boom trading off on ascending high notes, being egged on by the band and the crowd. Starting the second encore, Ed prefaces, "Alright, no more experimenting. We're gonna drive this thing home with ya. Seatbelts everybody ..." and they launch into "Do The Evolution". Ed uses a megaphone for the "High above ..." bridge in "Comatose". "Satan's Bed" starts and Ed jokes "I think we may be fucking with you again, sorry". The band nails "Satan's Bed", with supporting B3 by Boom (true to the studio version), and with Ed ad-libbing a hurried "Paris Hilton" after the line "Who set the standard 'born to be rich'?". After "Blood", Ed beckons "Is there anything left? (crowd roars) I think we did it all (crowd yells "No!!!")." Ed toasts the day to the shared birthday of Joey Ramone (he says "Johnny" at first) and Pete Townshend and dedicates "Baba O'Riley" to them. "Grand Rapids, who knew?!? That was great ... thank you so much. If (fans) listen to the tapes, it's gonna sound like we're just bullshittin', but you had to be here. This was really great tonight, thank you so, so much." Yellow Ledbetter contains a brief "Star-Spangled Banner" tease and Ed changing the second verse lyrics to "And I see them, I'd like to wish this whole fuckin war away / and I try, and I say, I keep waking up with the news today / and the lies they tell, I can't take no more / because my brother he's comin' home in a box or a bag". Ed replaces the last "I don't wanna stay" line with "Fuck it, let's stay."

Article pre-concert:

Pearl Jam has new luster

Forgot about Pearl Jam, didn't you?

It's OK. You can admit you let the fan-club membership expire. You'd see a concert or two, but you'd be the dude waving a lighter for "Black," leaving for a beer during the new songs. Your flannel shirt was long ago eaten by moths.

Well, aren't you kicking yourself now? "Pearl Jam," that long-awaited "return to form," has put the band back in the spotlight where it belongs.

"World Wide Suicide" jumped to the top of the Billboard rock singles chart faster than any song in the band's history. The album, released earlier this month, debuted at No. 2, giving the band its best week of sales in eight years.

The band, still associated with early-'90s Seattle grunge and known for furious anthems such as "Alive," "Daughter" and "Not For You," is experiencing a resurgence as it begins a new chapter in its career, Mike McCready says.

Calling from Chicago, where the band prepared for a two-night stand at the United Center, the guitarist spoke enthusiastically, at length, about the new album, Pearl Jam's storied history, the band's fiercely loyal fan base and what it's like to be back on top.

"It's just really exciting. It's something that we hadn't expected," he said.

McCready credits Pearl Jam's revival -- don't call it a "comeback" -- to several factors, including the strength of the new material (critics are calling it the best album since 1994's "Vitalogy") and the promotional muscle of its new label, J Records.

"Back in the early days, we harnessed a lot of energy, and we've reharnessed it on this record. Whether we 'returned to form', I'm not sure. It may be an energy thing," McCready said. "We worked really hard on this record, longer than we did on those other records, so that may have something to do with it.

"We got a new record label, and they seem to be excited about the record. We're both mutually working toward that goal of selling records, going on tour, promoting it. We feel very happy to be doing it for this one.

"Actually, grateful, because we're still around. Sixteen years ... it's like, who knew?"

Indeed. A lot more has happened in those 16 years than there's room to discuss -- the Ticketmaster feud, the Roskilde tragedy, Vote For Change, etc. Suffice it to say, Pearl Jam's story could fill a dozen good episodes of "Behind the Music."

Easily one of the most enduring groups to emerge from the last decade, Pearl Jam shot to stardom during America's infatuation with grunge.

The band (singer/guitarist Eddie Vedder, McCready, guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, current drummer Matt Cameron) remained popular throughout the early '90s, with at least a dozen rock-radio staples to its credit.

Disillusioned with fame, the band withdrew from the mainstream, releasing increasingly experimental material (starting with "No Code" in 1996) and refusing to promote itself through conventional methods.

"We did alienate ourselves and got lost in the music landscape a little bit. We got so big, so quickly, that it was kind of a mind game for all of us," McCready said, reflecting on "Ten," the band's explosive 1991 debut. "We only had one record out, and people wanted to write books about us and stuff like that, and, honestly, we had only been together for under a year.

"We didn't play the game. That's allowed us to last. Had we not pulled back at that time, I think we would have imploded somehow."

The band reinvented itself as a touring powerhouse, selling out arenas and amphitheaters with scant help from radio, MTV or the music press. Based on eclectic live shows that combine the hits with obscure B-sides, covers and improvs, Pearl Jam's cult-like following blossomed in reverse proportion to declining record sales. Entertainment Weekly has described Pearl Jam as the new Grateful Dead.

"I don't know how that happened," McCready said with a laugh. "I just ran into a couple of guys the other night who had seen 50 or 60 shows, and I know a couple of people who've seen a hundred shows. And I'm like, whoa."

The new album's commercial success is likely to widen that audience. McCready is glad the spotlight has returned, now that the band is better equipped to handle it.

"We've all grown through those experiences," he said. "We want to react positively. We want to tour this record and make it successful, because we feel happy with it. We want to put a good show on, most of all."

Pearl Jam concert helps kids' gardens grow[/url]

Pearl Jam to kids: Keep on rocking in the Green world.

The band, playing tonight at Van Andel Arena, surprised local nonprofit Mixed Greens with a big gift -- a dollar for every ticket sold.

With about 10,000 tickets sold so far, the local organization, which teaches organic fruit and vegetable gardening at local public schools, stands to reap a hefty windfall.

"It was pretty unexpected," said Lisa Rose Starner, Mixed Greens executive director. She was contacted earlier this month by people associated with the band and informed of the donation.

On its North American tour, which started last week, the rock band is giving a dollar from each ticket sale to a charity or nonprofit organization in every city it plays.

Recipients so far include Toronto's White Ribbon Campaign, an organization of men working to end violence against women; Albany's Grand Street Community Arts, which is trying to build an arts center in the city; and Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illness in Hartford, a patients' rights service.

"We decided we wanted to put one dollar from every ticket sale into the city that we're going to, into a foundation or local organization that we thought was pretty cool," said Mike McCready, one of Pearl Jam's guitarists.

"We thought that was a super-cool thing, to have kids learn how to do things organically."

The 3-year-old Mixed Greens -- slogan: "Growing kids who grow gardens" -- runs gardens and after-school and summer programs in Grand Rapids at Harrison Park and East Leonard elementary schools and Madison Middle School; and in Wyoming at Taft, Parkview and Rogers Lane elementary schools.

"We just happened to be a perfect fit for the band's giving parameters," Starner said. "There's a lot of demand for making kids healthy."

She said the money from Pearl Jam -- to be donated through its charity establishment, the Vitalogy Foundation -- will help with staffing and getting Mixed Greens gardens into more schools.

In each city, the foundation looks for organizations dedicated to youth, the arts, education, the environment, healthy eating and community health, said Sarah Seiler of Vandenberg Communications, a New York firm hired by the band to handle publicity for the tour and to research charitable opportunities.

"Mixed Greens really helps to foster all of that," Seiler said.

The band is known for participating in political causes, notably the Vote For Change Tour, which sought to rally support for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election.

Disillusioned with that experience, the band turned its focus toward grassroots organizations.

"We will speak our minds, but we also learned we need to focus locally on how our lives are, then act globally out of your local actions," McCready said. "Like, what are the problems in my direct vicinity, and how can I have a positive effect on them?"
