Inventory: Ten Memorable Saturday Night Live Musical Moments

....

7. April 22, 1992—Pearl Jam

Nirvana was, appropriately enough, the first of the Seattle grunge bands to play Saturday Night Live, in January of '92, and their storming versions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Territorial Pissings"—along with their 1993 performances of "Heart Shaped Box" and "Rape Me"—are among the band's best broadcast footage. But though it may be rock-critic sacrilege to say so, Pearl Jam's two visits to the show in April of '92 and April of '94 are even better, showing how grunge's debt to '70s arena rock could be honorably repaid. It's tough to choose which night was superior, especially since the '94 set came when Pearl Jam was at a creative and commercial peak, but the band's SNL debut gets a slight edge because of its revelatory power, manifested in the inspiring, heart-stopping version of "Alive." This definitely wasn't punk, and it sure wasn't hair-metal. It was accessible, earnest, and refreshingly un-slick.

"SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" ANNOUNCES STELLAR APRIL LINEUP

...

Also returning to SNL is -- according to a recent USA Today.com poll "the greatest American rock band ever" and according to Esquire's recent Esky Music Awards the Best Live Act -- Pearl Jam. The Seattle based band returns to SNL, making a rare television appearance, performing songs from their eagerly anticipated self-titled eighth album, their first studio record in four years. Its first single -- the blistering "Worldwide Suicide" -- has already received a four-star review in Rolling Stone and is currently the #1 Rock Track on the Billboard singles chart. Since their inception in 1991, Pearl Jam has sold nearly 60 million albums worldwide including millions of live bootlegs and sells out arenas all over the world. Their next world tour begins in May.

Pearl Jam to make rare TV appearance on SNL

NEW YORK — Pearl Jam will be the musical guests when Lindsay Lohan hosts NBC's Saturday Night Live on April 15.

It will be Lohan's third hosting stint — and a rare TV appearance for Pearl Jam. The Seattle rock band, which earned fame and critical acclaim during the Northwest's early 1990s grunge movement, will perform songs from their new self-titled album, slated for release May 2.

Antonio Banderas, star of the new film Take the Lead, will host SNL on April 8 with Mary J. Blige as musical guest. Blige will perform songs from her top-selling album The Breakthrough.
