Before tonight's KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas Night 2 they were interviewing Scott on this little stage by the concession area and I was like front row and after the interview I got to meet Scott. I shook his hand and then I asked him about when the next STP album would be coming out. He said probably a year from now, and that it'll probably take awhile since they want to make it as good as possible. He said there will definitely be a new album. I also asked him about "Happy" not making the record and he said Pharell took it first, and I told him Pharell's version sucks and he laughed. Was definitely a good conversation and it was a dream come true meeting my favorite musician. He was really nice and shook a lot of hands and signed stuff. Very down to earth guy, meeting him just increases my respect for him. Just thought I'd pass along the good news about the next record
...
It was by total luck. My friend was taking a leak so I was looking around for shirts and I heard them say Scott would be coming out for an interview at the little stage so I rushed my ass over there and moved up to the front by the end of the interview. I still can't believe I talked to him, luckily most people there didn't give a shit about him because if they did I couldn't have made it to the front. There were maybe 2 other Scott nuts like me there but that's it, otherwise casuals haha. Oh yeah during the interview he told this funny story about how he dressed up as Santa Claus before and it was the funniest he's sounded since 2006 probably. He also proclaimed that Santa is real.

Scott Weiland is Happy in Austin, TX.
I was lucky enough to be blessed with an amazing set in Austin, TX by one of today's most familar rock gods- Scott Weiland. The 2 hour show dabbled in some STP, some SW, and a Smiths cover.
The band entered the blue-christmas-light adorned stage to a thunderous roar from the audience. Doug & Co started off a slow slinky jam session. Weiland appeared on stage a minute later to add his patented vocals and slinky dancing to the melodic, trippy jam. The group followed the extended jam (10 minutes plus) up with a version of Reel Around the Fountain (The Smiths) where Weiland instead channeled Jim Morrison. It was a slow, but effective way to open the set. The band sounded very tight and it was quickly obvious that the past couple weeks off has done wonders for Scott's voice. He sounded full and powerful all night using some vibrato throughout the entire set.
Next was Killing Me Sweetly which was introduced as a latin-esque number. Scott and the band took some liberties with the live version over the record version, and it worked well. A surprisingly true-to-Deleo version of Vasoline followed which received a huge crowd reaction. Having seen STP myself a number of times over the years, I can safely say this was the best interpretation of Vasoline performed by a band other than STP that I have ever seen. The band then launched right into a heavier sounding versions of Paralysis, which also drew a huge crowd reaction.
Then something happened. Scott announced that they would be playing a beautiful tune for the 3 STP fans in the audience that knew it. Doug went to the keyboard and the band began playing the wonderful 3/4 timed Atlanta. Scott nailed the vocals and the added keys added an extra dimension to the sound that many STP performances of the same song lacked. A fantastically sonic and extended ending version of Mockingbird Girl followed.
After that were Unglued and Blind Confusion. At some point during Blind Confusion the AC in the venue failed which caused everyone to be sweating even more than they were already. Even Scott made a comment on the heat. Eventually the air came back on though, and the band plowed in to another extended Jam session.
After the fun jam session (in which Scott and the other members all fell to the ground and laid on the stage playing their instruments) the band launched into the always fantastic Interstate Love Song. Next was Big Black Monster. During BBM the drummer went back to another portion of the stage a video of him playing the drums was projected on to the screen. The set was closed out with a slightly rocked-up version of Barbarella
After a brief encore break the band returned and treated the listeners to Beautiful Day before closing the night with the best live performance of Missing Cleveland that I have heard yet on this tour.
The audience was respectful all night in Austin. I didnt hear one "STP" chant. A VR one broke out briefly but was quickly hushed (I like to think my dirty look did something to help). The Audience really ate up Scott and crew. Lots of strong reactions to the solo songs (and of course to the STP material).
The Good:
-Scott's voice sounded fantastic
-The band has tightened up a lot. The performances were very tight and precise. -
-The covers were all very well done. Unglued was played slightly different than the way STP does it, but it actually worked out well.
-Jam sessions were interesting and showed off the band's talent well. The drummer is very talented (albeit a bit quirky) and the rest of the band is clearly quite talented at their instruments as well.
-The new material (mostly) sounded really great. Especially Blind Confusion, Missing Cleveland, and Paralysis.
-Scott Seems very happy and content.
The Bad:
-Beautiful Day doesn't tranfer well to a live performance. The trademark chorus with the layered vocals just doesn't sound right with Scott singing each individual "beautiful". Additionally the layers of instruments simply can't be reproduced live. As such the live version sounds slightly clunky compared to the great record version. I'd recommend switching this one out in favor of "Tangle With Your Mind" or "She Sold Her System". Both of those songs would transfer much better to a live experience.
-Scott is still drinking, but seemed very coherent and collected at the show. A world of improvement from when I saw him last January in Austin on Velvet Revolver's last tour. I hope he is doing well.
-Scott refused to sign STP or VR material. I was waiting by the bus afterwards with a few other fans hoping to catch a glimpse (we eventually left before seeing him) and security was returning a bunch of STP merch to a couple fans telling them that Scott refused to sign any STP merch. Kind of silly and slightly backhanded if you ask me, but I can understand that he is promoting his solo career. Still, its not quite right (In my opinion) for him to refuse to sign something for a fan. Its not like the fan was asking him to sign a Pearl Jam CD.
Things to take home:
Scott seemed really, really happy. He was joking around with Doug and the rest of the band throughout the entire set. He was very smiley and happy looking. He even cracked a few jokes (when swapping out his ear monitor he said "They're strapping a new box to my ass"). Its been a long time since I've seen Scott look this content and happy. It was a pleasant change from his mood a year ago. The show was even more memorable for me, because afterwards I proposed to my girlfriend of 4 years. Now we have a very special evening to remember for our engagement.
I think the SW Solo tour has now officially taken off. Comparing the videos/mp3s from the first leg of the tour to this leg, it doesnt even seem like the same 5 individuals. They have clearly hit their stride (Scott included). I recommend anyone that can see them goes and checks them out. Its not an STP experience, its something completely different, but to me, it was just as satisfying.

STP HAS 18 NEW SONGS
...But he also is reunited with STP, which tours in July and is ready to take on a new album.
"We've already got 18 songs written. We'll probably whittle it down to the best 12," he says. "But then there'll be a lot of other songs ready for the next record."
That means STP has no rumblings of breaking up again. Sometimes, communication deteriorates among band members, but that's human nature, he says.
"We're working with (producer) Don Was. And if he could make records with the (Rolling) Stones and all their shenanigans ... then he can handle STP."
