Pearl Jam set list at Gibson Amphitheatre on September 30 is a force of nature

Pearl Jam’s sold out show last night at Gibson Amphitheatre, the first of their four-gig stints at the venue, fell within the first week of the band touring to promote its new album, Backspacer. With just a couple of slight kinks to iron out while delivering their new material, the band performed an electrifying show that had two encores and lasted until 10:48 pm.

It remains clear that despite great success and countless gigs under his belt over the years, lead singer Eddie Vedder still sings with as much conviction as is equal to the band’s fans' fierce reverence towards him. Stage diving was not part of the gig last night, but Vedder’s voice is more powerful ever upon the release of the band's ninth studio album.

With its prescient title, Pearl Jam’s new album Backspacer has proven to take them back to the past, as Vedder announced last night that the new album had landed at Number 1, yielding the group its first release at the top of the charts in thirteen years. After its second week out, it reached the peak position, a fact Vedder noted on stage last night. “So now we can say to our kids, ‘Hey, just remember your dad is number one now.”

Certainly the band was number one to its fans last night, as the entire audience stood on its feet during the entire show. Throughout most of the songs, the audience sang along with the band. Whether numbers were more sedate or uptempo was irrelevant to the frenzied crowd.

The present tense is working out quite well for this group that has staunchly managed to retain their integrity when it comes to their fans, a feat that has not been accomplished by numerous acts that have achieved the level of success that Pearl Jam enjoys.

True to form, Vedder dissed Dick Cheney, and then made a reference to Los Angeles being close to the ocean just before the band broke into “Amongst The Waves,” from their new album. “It’s a song about healing,” he explained. “It’s not about surfing, it’s about surfing relationships,” he clarified. Vedder, himself, has long been an avid surfer. With its lyrics, “You’ve bled yourself, the wounds are gone. It’s rare then where is nothing wrong, survived and you’re amongst the fittest,” the song is in keeping with Pearl Jam’s lyrics about survival in a sometimes brutal world, and coming out on top, a recurrent theme to members of the band in their music, as well as in their professional and personal lives. Witnessing last night's show, it is not hard to understand why this band is on top.

The fluid guitar solos from Mike McCready and Stone Gossard during songs like “Even Flow” had a perfect backdrop with the band that includes keyboardist Kenneth E. Gaspar, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron, who also made it into the spotlight during the show. McCready primarily played lead as Gossard played rhythm. Vedder also played guitar during a few songs, and at one point, gave several tambourines he played on stage to members of the audience, one of which he signed while performing.

Vedder announced to the crowd that he had gone to the doctor, and the results came back positive. He proclaimed that the doctor said of his diagnosis, “You have some heavy metal in your blood stream.” Vedder then quipped, “I think you got me confused with Michael McCready.” The audience roared with laughter. “The only way to get rid of this is to listen to some Yanni,” he continued. The band then broke into “Present Tense,” with Vedder’s trademark voice solely accompanied by guitar.

The encore included a four-member string ensemble, which Vedder said would “kind of class up the joint.” The arrangement, used for “Just Breathe” and “The End,” worked perfectly. Ben Harper, the show’s opener, joined the band, contributing on “Red Mosquito.”

Vedder enlisted a guest from the audience to join him on stage, a young fan named Jacob.

Just before performing their final song of the evening, Vedder discussed a newly made friend, John McCullough, of whom he explained, “His battalion is going off to do another nine months in the Middle East.” Vedder added, “We made mistakes and we’re doing the best we can to fix them.” Vedder then opened up his button-down shirt, exposing a t-shirt that McDunn had given to him, which had “USMC” imprinted on it. With this, the show ended with Pearl Jam’s longheld custom of playing a cover song. Accordingly, the band broke into their last number of the night, Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.”

“We belong together,” Vedder sang during “Black.” Therein was the most realistic statement that could be made about Pearl Jam and their veracious audience.

Pearl Jam 'Don't Give a S---' About Topping the Charts

Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheater may be a good 15 miles from the Pacific, but don't tell that to Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. At the first of four shows at the 6,000-seat venue, the Seattle band's lead singer declared that he was taking the enthusiastic audience on a little surfing safari.

"We're playing almost all of the ocean songs," he said, "because we're so close to the shore." Vedder, an avid surfer, stayed true to his promise, performing such tunes as 'Big Wave,' 'Amongst the Waves' and several others that qualify as Pearl Jam's rough-and-tumble equivalent of sea shanties.

The band played plenty of hits but also indulged the hardcore fans with semi-rare performances of 'Tremor Christ' and 'Rats,' the latter prefaced with the opening from 'Ben.' Whether playing rarities or now-classics like 'Black' from 'Ten,' the band's 1991 debut, Pearl Jam displayed a rawness and intensity from the moment it hit the stage with 'Why Go' that never let up through the two-hour-plus show. The quintet's virtuosity and ferociousness were surpassed only by the fervency that Vedder and company brought to nearly every song. Even an old chestnut like 'Even Flow,' which the band rushed through at first, rang anew due to Mike McCready's astonishingly nimble guitar work, much of it performed with his guitar behind his head.

McCready played like a man possessed throughout much of the evening, but his potency was matched note for note by bassist Jeff Ament, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard and drummer Matt Cameron, especially when they bulldozed through electrifying set closer 'Porch.' As for Vedder, after all this time, he still clutches the microphone with both hands as if it were his lifeline. But there's a deft lightness in his approach to the audience that wasn't always there in the early years that balances out the pain, suffering and downright desolation conveyed in most of his lyrics.

The show occurred on the same day that 'Backspacer,' the band's new album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking the group's first chart topper in 13 years. But Pearl Jam came to play, not to rest on their laurels.

"By the way, we got news today that the album we put out is No. 1," Vedder said more than an hour into the concert. "We had a couple of those a while ago. Back then, we just didn't give a s---. All these years later, we still don't give a s---. But a few of us have kids. We're not going to explain what it means, but your dad's f---ing No. 1 ... and don't you forget it!"

After igniting the nearly exhausted crowd with a potent 'Alive' during the second encore, Vedder took off his shirt to reveal a USMC t-shirt. He emotionally talked about Col. John McCullough, an officer he'd come to know, as well as McCullough's children. "John and his battalion are leaving in a few days to do another nine months in the Middle East." As he tapped his chest, Vedder said, "I just wanted to feel his presence." With that, Pearl Jam ripped into a spirited version of Neil Young's 'Rockin' in the Free World' as a sendoff for McCullough and a feral benediction to close the evening.

Live review: Pearl Jam at Gibson Amphitheatre

The band rode wave after wave of its music, surfing steadily through its songs' curls and switch ups. The sound was excellent and the size of the venue let fans and band connect.

Four songs into Pearl Jam's Wednesdaynight performance at the Gibson Amphitheatre, Eddie Vedder shifted his weight from one foot to the other, as if to maintain his balance atop something moving fast. Lead guitarist Mike McCready leaned back hard; Stone Gossard, on rhythm, hunched forward. Bassist Jeff Ament kept his head down as if holding on to an invisible mooring line. Matt Cameron cast himself as the storm's eye -- back straight, face calm as he beat out a spray of drum notes.

After nearly two decades and hundreds of shows, the most resilient group in alternative rock has become something simple at its core: a surf band.

It's not so much that Vedder can't resist aquatic metaphors, though the lifelong beach bum acknowledged that predilection Wednesday, quipping, "There are a lot of ocean references [tonight] because we're close to the shore, and it's healing." Nor is Pearl Jam's sound anything like the treble-heavy instrumentals of Dick Dale or the Surfaris.

Pearl Jam makes surf music in the philosophical sense. Its sets build in arcs. Some songs peak quickly and crash, while others take shape gradually. To negotiate their tricky changes, each player employs serious muscle control. If he stops to pose, he'll topple.

Wednesday the band started off fast and clean, tapping into the punchy spirit of its new album, “Backspacer,” the band's first chart-topping album in more than a decade. (Vedder announced that he and his mates didn't care about the win yet admitted that it would be sweet to tell their children that "Daddy's No. 1.") It seemed like this would be a punk show, with the rhythm section beating out a punishing rat-a-tat.

The more metal-flavored "Force of Nature" and the hymn-like "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" broadened the show's tone, allowing McCready to stretch out on a solo and the crowd to itch its singalong scratch. Finally, "Amongst the Waves," a pretty love song that proved more complex live than it seems on "Backspacer," provided the space Pearl Jam needed to become (to borrow a term coined by fellow alt-rock titans Jane's Addiction) ocean-sized.

The Gibson helped Pearl Jam get bigger. The sound was excellent, crisp and crackling with detail, and the medium capacity of just over 6,000 let fans and band connect without being cramped.

That last goal -- connection -- relates to the way Pearl Jam is not a surf band. While surfing is a solo activity, allowing for the contemplative, grace-filled moments Vedder often describes in his lyrics, Pearl Jam is essentially a team. Vedder, though charismatic, never hams it up, preferring even at 44 to throw himself around like a kid at a club; he does not preen like a sex symbol or a demigod. In concert, he places himself among his mates, who attend mostly to each other, working to smoothly make every transition.

This straightforward attitude feeds the communal feeling at Pearl Jam shows. The band's audience is supremely pleasurable to join; it's enthusiastic without being overly aggressive, all smiles and raised arms. Wednesday, the fans were ever so slightly more subdued than usual, perhaps because this was the first of four shows at the theater (the band was due to play tonight before traveling to Texas to headline the Austin City Limits festival on Sunday, and then return to the Gibson on Tuesday and Wednesday.)

Rare older material, like "Tremor Christ" and the amiably sleazy "Rats," earned the loudest cheers, though the new material was well received.

A few guests aided the band's effort. Ben Harper, whose brawny Relentless7 opened the show, added some sting to "Red Mosquito." A string section sweetened the sound on two new ballads, "Just Breathe" and "The End," and keyboardist Kenneth "Boom" Gaspar added texture and detail on several songs.

The most charming guest of all, though, was the young man Vedder pulled up onstage during the second encore. He shouted out a verse with the singer, who then positioned him in front of McCready. As the guitarist took a solo, the boy shook like a piece of flotsam being tossed about. He was overwhelmed, but he rode the wave nonetheless.
