Durant les rappels du show de Petty: American Girl avec Ed (Ed chante le 2e verse)

TFT Notes: This show is the first of six shows in support of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The first notes of "Last Exit" start with Ed exclaiming "Let's get it on!". "Do the Evolution" goes a little off course during the verses, and Ed sings "Admire me / Admire my home / Forgive me / It's my own fault". Ed references the first show of the PJ/Petty tour, "I know there's a few kind people who are dedicated to our group and they travel different places to see us. And that's what our group is gonna be doing for the next couple of weeks. We're gonna be travellin' around seeing Tom Petty and we're proud to be on the same stage and looking forward to this little trip here." "Given To Fly" is dedicated to "Tom and the Heartbreakers, thanks for taking us along for the ride." Ed previews "Army Reserve" with "It's hard to read the paper and it's hard to be an American without thinking about some of our fellow countrymen who are over dealing with an intense situation. As we're here enjoy ourselves, this goes out to them. These are the army reservists and soldiers over there doing what they can do." Ed later jokes "Just think if (Tom) was my dad, my name would be 'Eddie Petty' (crowd laughs). But I would have grown up in a really nice house, so I would have dealt with it I guess." With the crowd an equal share of Pearl Jam and Tom Petty fans, Ed plays the chords to "Better Man" more quietly than usual, asks the crowd to singalong, and the crowd sings the first verse and chorus just fine. The "Daughter" tag includes the chorus of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" repeated twice. Jeff starts to play the bass line to the "It's OK" tag, but the song quiets down to its end shortly thereafter. After "Alive", Ed wraps up the show prior to the final song, "You've been very kind. This is the first night of this experiment. So far we like the conclusion - the hypothesis was good, but.... thank you very much, each and every one of you. Thanks. And for us, we're one song away from relaxing and getting to go to a rock show ourselves, we can't wait. this is just a great great night, so thank you very much." Before starting "Rockin' in the Free World" though, Ed interjects and references the recent donation of $37 billion by Warren Buffett to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Energizing the crowd, he pleads with them to "say 'thank you' to that state of mind. How exciting to see rich guys being responsible and caring. It's 'sexy' is what it is. It's beautiful. Here's to Warren Buffett. We hope it spreads. This song's by a friend of Tom's, and a friend of ours." During the song, he changes the words "There's a billion points of light for the homeless man / finally a rich man with a gentle hand."

Pearl Jam, those chameleons, are comfortable in their skin

Eddie Vedder chuckles when he looks back on the early years of Pearl Jam's life cycle and how the group balanced the pressures of success: "You get growing pains when you get taller, but we got them when we were trying to shrink."

The Seattle quintet's 1991 Epic debut, "Ten," remains a modern-rock touchstone, having sold 9.4 million copies in the United States. But Pearl Jam grew famously uneasy with its sudden success, refusing to compromise its integrity in exchange for enduring mass popularity. No videos. No endorsements. A bare minimum of media interaction.

Instead, the band released a series of increasingly experimental albums that shook off nearly all but its most devoted fans. Even at Pearl Jam's no-two-the-same concerts, 10-minute jams, obscure B-sides and covers were given equal importance as the hits. As guitarist Stone Gossard notes, "We've gone through a period of rejecting what comes the most easy for us and trying for something beyond that."

But on the band's new self-titled eighth album, Pearl Jam sounds more at home in its skin than ever. The 13-track set probes the human toll of the post-Sept. 11 world via a rich tapestry of characters and narrators set to some of the band's best songwriting in years. The album arrives May 2 via J Records.

Stepping back from the unvarnished, anti-President Bush sentiments of 2002's "Riot Act" and the 2004 Vote for Change tour, the new set finds Vedder re-embracing the storytelling of classics like "Alive" and "Black." For a time, the artist considered using segues and narration to tie the project together under a single concept, but ultimately he says a less-structured theme "just fell right into place without even thinking about it."

"Through telling stories, you may be able to transmit an emotion or a feeling or an observation of modern reality rather than editorializing, which we've seen plenty of these days," Vedder says, adding that writing from perspectives other than his own was "a right that I'd forgotten that I had."

Gossard, guitarist Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron have also upped the musical ante on standouts like the breathless punk of "Comatose," the gripping rocker "Life Wasted," the brooding, psychedelic closer "Inside Job" and "Come Back," an R&B-drenched love song that builds to an anthemic finish. "This record feels like a coming together again in terms of accepting our natural strengths and also incorporating the best of our experiments," Gossard says.

That recipe has revitalized Pearl Jam at modern rock radio, a format it dominated in the early 1990s alongside Seattle brethren Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. First single "World Wide Suicide" became the fastest-charting song of the group's career, reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in just two weeks.

In another unusual move, the song was made available for free download a week ahead of its radio-add date via Pearl Jam's Web site and its myspace.com page. Several stations also began spinning album track "Unemployable," the B-side to the "World Wide Suicide" single on iTunes.

Even as its record sales eroded, Pearl Jam remained a concert juggernaut, grossing $36 million from 68 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore since 2003. Ament is particularly excited to feature the new songs on the band's world tour, which stops Monday and Tuesday at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center in a co-headlining gig with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

"We've actually rehearsed more for this tour than we've ever rehearsed in our lives," he says. "Matt is singing a lot of the vocal harmonies, and he's just killing it. The benefit of playing in a Kiss cover band when you're 12 is that you learn to sing!"

Petty and Pearl Jam: Who knew?

It's not like Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees, but next week's two concerts by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam at Xcel Energy Center did surprise a lot of people. They're two bands from different generations that sound very little alike. And neither act has trouble filling up an arena on its own (which may explain why St. Paul, Milwaukee and Denver are the only cities to get the pairing).
If you think about it, though -- and that's what we rock critics get paid to do -- the two veteran groups actually do have plenty in common. They're staples of Middle America rock 'n' roll, even though they came from opposite coasts. They've never really been en vogue, but they've never really gone out of fashion. And they each have a dozen-plus songs that have been played to death on the radio, but are still pretty exciting to hear in concert.

Here's a side-by-side look at their careers.

YEAR STARTED

Petty/Heartbreakers: 1975 (forming out of another band, Mudcrutch).

Pearl Jam: 1990 (forming out of Mother Love Bone).

ORIGINAL MEMBERS LEFT

Petty/Heartbreakers: All except the drummer. Original bassist Ron Blair rejoined in 2002 after a 21-year hiatus. He replaced his replacement, Howie Epstein, who died in 2003 of a heroin overdose.

Pearl Jam: All except the drummer. However, current kit man Matt Cameron (ex-Soundgarden) did play on an early demo by the band and has been with it since 1998.

MOST SUCCESSFUL ALBUM

Petty/Heartbreakers: 1989's "Full Moon Fever" at more than 5 million U.S. copies (not counting 1993's "Greatest Hits," which is now over 10 million).

Pearl Jam: 1991's "Ten," with 12 million sold. The next-biggest seller was the 1993 follow-up, "Vs." at 7 million.

BEST ALBUM

Petty: "Wildflowers," Petty's loose, songwriter-oriented 1994 collaboration with producer Rick Rubin, which includes "You Don't Know How It Feels,"You Wreck Me" and "It's Good to Be King."

Pearl Jam: "Vs.," which is more visceral and ambitious than "Ten" and features "Rearviewmirror,"Daughter,"Animal" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town."

BATTLE WITH THE INDUSTRY

Petty: Took on his record label, MCA, over the $9.98 list price of his fourth album, "Hard Promises," in 1981. Having already lost a contract negotiation with Petty before his "Damn the Torpedoes" breakthrough in 1979, MCA agreed to knock $1 off the price when the rocker threatened to withhold his recordings and organize a fan protest. He jumped to Warner Bros. in 1994.

Pearl Jam: Took on Ticketmaster over the price of its service fees in 1994. Fighting for lower fees so it could keep its tickets under $20, the band accused the company of monopoly-like business practices before the U.S. Justice Department. The department eventually ruled in Ticketmaster's favor. But the band developed one of the first direct-to-fans ticket-sale clubs.

WORK WITH A LEGEND

Petty/Heartbreakers: With Bob Dylan, who later sang on their single "Jammin' Me." Petty also joined Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne in the Traveling Wilburys in 1989.

Pearl Jam: Recorded the "Mirror Ball" album with Neil Young in 1995 and has occasionally performed with him since then.

LATEST EFFORT

Petty: His third non-Heartbreakers album, "Highway Companion," is due July 25.

Pearl Jam: Eighth album, self-titled, came out last month via a new deal with J Records. It's widely considered the band's best in a decade.

Just got back, fucking awesome.

The drum solo during Evenflow was incredible. Mike also played the first part of the solo behind his head.

Last Exit caught me off guard as the opener, but it was fucking awesome.

Army Reserve sounds amazing live, easily the best of the new songs.

The entire crowd sang the first verse and chorus to Betterman. It was a great moment.

Even the Petty fans who were sitting down behind me (fuckers) were going nuts by the end of PJ's set.

I don't really know a lot of Petty's music, but he knows how to work a crowd and put on a great show.

And Eddie was so incredibly wasted by the time he came out for American Girl. He was doing some real whacky dances.
