Salle: Rod Laver Arena

Setlist:
Wasted Reprise, Life Wasted, Animal, Spin The Black Circle, Corduroy, Severed Hand, Jeremy, Given To Fly, Marker In The Sand, Even Flow, Insignificance, Army Reserve, Daughter(Another Brick In The Wall), Leatherman, Do The Evolution, Better Man, Rearviewmirror

Rappels #1:
Inside Job, Once, Come Back, Black, Alive

Rappels #2:
Dead Man Walking, State Of Love And Trust, Comatose, Why Go, Rockin' In The Free World, Yellow Ledbetter(Little Wing)

TFT Notes: During the "Daughter" tag, Ed changes one of the lines in "Another Brick in the Wall, part II" to "President Bush, leave those kids alone". Ed makes fun of the Australian Prime Minister John Howard's close relationship with Bush, references Howard blaming the economic downturn on shortage of bananas, and referred to Howard as "Bush's banana" to laughs and cheers from the crowd. Eddie comes on after the 2nd encore break alone on stage for "Dead Man". During "Rockin' in the Free World", the crew tried to throw a tambourine for Eddie, but hit Stone in the head instead. During "Yellow Ledbetter", Ed spots a security guard trying to remove an audience member for smoking, and cuts off from the song to let the guy stay since it's the last song, and asks the guy to give him a cigarette. When the security guard pulled away, Ed went back into the second verse of YL and improv-ed this little episode into the lyrics, followed by a "Little Wing" tag, complete with full vocals. On the setlist but not played: "Parachutes" and "Know Your Rights".

Kings of Leon were pretty awesome! Was good to see the floor all rocking out! Upper and lower sections still mainly seated. Then Master slave starts and BOOM the ALL sections up on there feet cheering and clapping was insane.

Wasted reprise starts up and most people are in my section are singing along, then BAM! Right into Life Wasted! The band were full of energy and the energy didnt want to stop. Then a one two punch with animal and then STBC!! The crowd were rather loud so far but got even louder when ed started Corduroy everyone clapping in unison before the first chorus starts up. Next up is servered hand great version of it and an awesome solo which went a bit longer than it usually does. Then Eddie talks about Rod Laver which I cant remember then talks about if it wasnt for the next song he'd still be doing some job, which i also cant remember.. Then Jeremy starts and and once again the fans belt it out.
Next is Marker which for me was awesome because I really wanted to hear this! Then even flow kicks in and the crowd goes nuts! Mike does his solo after his solo mike and jeff stand to the left of the stage and ed and stone move to the right and Matt's all alone doing his drum solo which the crowd ABSOLUTELY loved! A nice tight version of insignificance before the band FINALLY decides to slow it down with nice version of daugther with the crowd in full force! Followed by the ABITW tag!
But once again the band pick it up and go into Leatherman, next DTE and the crowd love it! Hallelujah bit was awesome the crowd with there hands in the air singing along. Nice applause and cheers as stone does both his solo's too! Betterman comes up and as usual the good old Melb crowd took over the whole first verse! Then into a rather intense save it for later tag and nice mikey solo! Then RVM starts! Very nice version! The jam in the middle is REAL short compared with what were used to but works rather sweet! End set! ( Given To Fly is missing from the setlist... dont memba where it goes though )

Whole lot of clapping and cheering around Rod Laver to get the guys out back on stage. Matt is out first with a fist in the air getting everyone back on there feet! The band start Inside Job all huddled up in front of matt's kit. Minus Ed.... Until the bit where he starts singing and he walks to the mic ( with huge applause from the melb crowd ). After an incredible version of Inside Job the band sort of gets lost as they forgot what song they were meant to play next! Ed blames stone and goes something along the lines of "cmon your the youngest" with stone just laughing before firing up an awesome version of once! Ed says the next one is a request and starts Come Back! I really wanted to hear this as a few months ago my grandmother passed away, so yer there was sort of a tear in my eye! They then start Black! Great crowd response to the opening chords! Pretty sure stone was on an electric for this! Great job at the do do do's at the end. Then eddie starts the "we belong together tag" and i tell you the whole 10c section really got into it! Then after a blistering mike solo stone starts the all to familiar riff of alive and the crowd goes NUTS! Everyone hands up in the air singing along the whole song, and nice "YEAH" and fist pumps as mike solo's encore 1 to a huge crowd roar of appreciation!

I think this is where ed came out by himself and handed out his bottle to people up front and went "i said have a bit not all." As ed came out by himself and a bloke behind me goes "deadman" he's mate just goes "pfft yer right." Then ed talks about the death penalty and goes "this one's deadman" or something like that! I turn around and the look on our faces were like HOLY CRAP! The rest of the boys rejoin Ed and start State and wow the band is really feeding off the crowd! Not just for state but the whole night! They start comatose and for some reason sheesh! The crowd were singing really loud! Matt starts the drumming to why go and once again the crowd go nuts! Awesome singing i think mike did the solo behind is head for this one?

The opening riff to RITFW start and the house lights go up and HOLY CRAP! The crowd and band are intense! Everyone jumping around and singing! Eddie went through numerous tamborines and a few into the crowd. HUGE applause and im thinking thats it, but i see mike switch guitars and I go to my bro LEDBETTER! Ed goes "fuck the people tommorow if they get upset were gonna play this now" During the song Ed stops and goes "mr security man" and asks the security guy what he's doing. The security guy does the smoking motion the crowd BOO's! And ed goes leave the kid alone. Ed changes the lyrics to "mr security man, i know your just doing your job" then actually lights a smoke himself and goes "you have to go after me first because im the bad guy" HUGE cheers from the crowd! Mike starts to solo and all the band put there instruments down but ed runs to mike and whispers something. And they start a tag ( sorry i dont know what the name was ) but sheesh this ledbetter went for AGES because of it! FINALLY ed runs to mike whispers something and he solo's again to end an INCREDIBLE night which went for about 2.5hrs!

Somewhere in there was a speech about banana's which was ABSOLUTELY hillarious! He goes "i got a banana right here" and grabs his crotch! It was in response to australian Prime Minisiter blaming the economic problems on bananas!

The final song was Yellow Ledbetter, then a full version of Little Wing, then back into the end of Ledbetter to end the show. Stunning.

Overall, I have to say the Melbourne Ten Club crowd was very disappointing. The fanclub contingent took up atleast 20 rows and, while the first few rows were excellent as always, there were so many "fans" standing around looking like they were completely bored. Still really really enjoyed it - Linc and I were 8th row Mike - but the crowd was a severe letdown after the hype it was built up to be.

The general crowd, in terms of the non-floor areas, should be ashamed. Ed was heard to quietly say to the front rows "It's gonna be another tough one", then said "If you're going to be this quiet then I will tell some stories" early on in the show. Mike was trying to get the crowd going on his side and was visibly annoyed early on, so the band essentially resorted to playing for the Ten Clubbers on the floor who were "into it".

The crowd will shine through on Betterman and Daughter (as always in Australia). Personal highlights were Come Back (which the fucking NAILED), Inside Job (first time in Oz) and Yellowe Ledbetter/Little Wing. Fantastic encore which, to be honest, the crowd didn't deserve. Long-time fan Gus (Gustophiles) will get his golden vocals on the bootleg at the end of "State of Love and Trust" - onya Gus. Ed also had a couple of hilarious digs at John Howard, and a overly-physical security guard who was pulling at the shirt of a bloke who was lighting up a smoke in the stands. Will come out great on the bootleg.

They played Army Reserve also.

that was a freakin awesome show! The crowd down on the floor was very much into it. Ed went through about a half dozen tamporines on Rockin in the free world. I was hoping for the extended version of Save it for later but it cut short. Still very cool.

I thought the crowd was good! Down front on Stone's side.
I think Ed was just riling us when he was talking about the crowd at the start because man... the crowd was into it.

Someone said the test is if they give you betterman intro to sing by yourself... well they did tonight and the crowd delivered.

Funny when ed threw the mic into the crowd!

Great concert. It simply kicked ass and you could tell the band was very appreciative of the crowd support despite what the guy above said.

given to fly was also played

Grunge rockers still angry

Image
Still rockin': Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder gets the crowd going at Rod Laver Arena last night.

Well before the Dixie Chicks took on US President George Bush, Pearl Jam was mainstream music's loudest protest voice.

The band's singer Eddie Vedder led the Vote for Change campaign in the US.

At Rod Laver Arena 31/2 years ago, Vedder wore a T-shirt saying "No war, no way" and, wearing a George Bush mask onstage, mocked the President. Within a month of that show, America was back at war with Iraq.

The band's guitarist, Stone Gossard, said Vedder's vocal anti-war stance caused some friction within the band.

"Eddie was outspoken very early about the war. There were struggles within the band as to whether it was best to express it with so much vitriol," Gossard said. "In retrospect, you have to give him credit. He had to get his views out there, because once the momentum started heading towards war everyone just fell into line so they wouldn't get called unpatriotic."

On the band's politically charged self-titled eighth album, Vedder sounds as alive and focused as when he was an angry young man. "It's a shame to awake in a world of pain/What does it mean when a war has taken over?" he sings on the first single World Wide Suicide.

Life Wasted and Army Reserve also takes aim at the war, while Unemployable focuses on problems at home: "On his brain weighs the curse of 30 bills unpaid."

A large part of Pearl Jam's longevity can be put down to its loyalty to its fans.

It plays many album cuts in its shows, and digitally records every concert for fans to download. It sued entertainment goliath Ticketmaster, forcing it to reveal its ticket surcharge to customers.

"It's the classic dilemma: you have to use them for the most part, and they have a vast efficient ticket system, but it is stand up and crack them in the jaw once, you can level the playing field," Gossard said.

Since it helped kick-start grunge in the early '90s, the Seattle band has sold nearly 60 million albums.

While its recent sales haven't been in the league of the world's super groups, it still has a reputation for playing impassioned stadium rock shows.

Last night, after the Kings of Leon warmed up the crowd at Rod Laver Arena with its southern-fried boogie, Pearl Jam had the crowd on its feet, singing along from the opening song, Life Wasted.

It interspersed its new songs with classics such as Jeremy, Even Flow and Insignificance.

After a day relaxing on the tennis court, Vedder said the band was happy to be back at the arena. Saying he used to serve Laver when he worked as a barman in San Diego, "who knew that years later he would give us a place to play over and over?"

Vedder to Howard - Get Your Hand Off Bush's Banana

Image

Pearl Jam were at their biting best with Eddie Vedder using the podium of the Australian stage to throw venom at the most evil men in the world – the politicians.

"Your guy is blaming the economy of the price of bananas. I've got a banana for John Howard," Vedder said grabbing his crotch. "Tell him to get his hand off Bush's banana".

Pearl Jam is equal parts rock concert, equal parts political statement and Vedder doesn't hide the fact that he doesn't like George W Bush nor any respect for Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

However, Vedder does have a connection and genuine respect for the fans. At one stage he honored the venue, The Rod Laver Arena, with a story about how when he worked in a hotel in San Diego once, Rod Laver would often stay and Rod always had a glass of champagne and two beautiful women by his side.

Musically, there are acts who go anywhere near the power or the passion of a Pearl Jam gig. Special mention to Mike McCreedy and Matt who stole the evening with their solos in 'Even Flow'.

The two and a half hour show had the right balance of old and new, opening with 'Life Wasted' from the new record but then quickly offering up the back to back gems of 'Animal', 'Spin The Black Circle' and 'Corduroy'.

Pearl Jam return to Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, with support Kings of Leon.

The setlist for Monday, November 14 was:

Wasted Reprise, Life Wasted, Animal, Spin The Black Circle, Corduroy, Severed Hand, Jeremy, Given To Fly, Marker In The Sand, Even Flow, Insignificance, Army Reserve, Daughter/Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2 (Pink Floyd), Leatherman, Do The Evolution, Better Man / (Save It For Later), Rearviewmirror

1st encore: Inside Job, Once, Come Back, Black, Alive

2nd encore: Dead Man, State Of Love And Trust, Comatose, Why Go, Rockin' In The Free World (Neil Young), Yellow Ledbetter/Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)

Pearler of an ambush

Image

U2's Bono isn't the only rock star activist in the country right now.

Eddie Vedder, frontman for American grunge survivors Pearl Jam, can be just as outspoken.
On the band's previous tour of Australia, Vedder regularly donned a George W. Bush mask as he took aim at the US President.

Last night at the first of three Melbourne concerts this week, Vedder again fired a broadside at Mr Bush, inserting the line "President Bush leaves this world alone" into the middle of one of Pearl Jam's biggest hits, Daughter.

Vedder had earlier suggested his fans start writing letters to the Government thanking them in advance for sending soldiers back from Iraq -- assuming it would happen.

"We want our Australians back home," he said to a roar of approval from the full house.

But the two-hour-plus show was more about the Seattle band's 15-year career than politics.

Pearl Jam pack no fancy tricks, just a catalogue of songs people are desperate to hear.

Career-making singles such as Jeremy shared space with new material from the rejuvenated self-titled album of this year -- some sounding more vital than others after all these years but still delivered with an unmistakable passion.

Pearl Jam may not sell as many albums as they used to but every move remains iconic.

Even the audience have their icons. Australian cricket superstar Shane Warne and Hollywood actor and fellow activist Tim Robbins were among those singing every word to Betterman.

Pearl Jam perform two more concerts at Rod Laver Arena tonight and on Thursday. Tickets for both shows are still available.

Here’s my experience of the Melb 1 show, I could get straight to the point and talk about the show but the whole build up for me was exhilarating so excuse me while I go off on a tangent for a bit, I’ve broken it up in paragraphs so if you don’t wanna read anything other than about the show you can skip, here goes from the start:

I leave work at 4:30 and have to pick my girlfriend up from Uni in Port Melbourne and drop her home, so I’m speeding all the way the anticipation is killing me, I’ve been waiting 3 years for the guys to come back and the day is finally here I’m pumped and am meeting my brother at RLA around 6:30, so I get home and change and quickly roll a quiet little joint for myself, I jump in the car and I can feel the energy pulsating throughout my entire body. I’m cruising along with Melb ’03 night 2 pumping in the car and decide to indulge in my finely rolled number. Now things have gotten serious, the trip in isn’t too dramatic but I think my voice was shot by the time I parked near RLA, I don’t know how Ed does it night in night out but my voice is gone after a half hour car ride, mind you I was giving it a belting!

So I meet my brother and we go and get some beers standing around chatting etc. I have a friend who has tickets for night 2 and 3 but none for the first show so I call him to see if he got a Guernsey, in a dull tone he replies with “umm,… yeah” and I’m like awesome I’m stoked for him, then he continues on,.. “I’m just arriving in the VIP carpark..” I’m like WTF??? “Ohh,.. and I’m backstage for the night”, one could only help but feel a bit jealous, you see he’s friends with the sister of Anthony who was the Aussie guy killed at Roskilde in 2000. My friend was backstage in 03 as well and I was jealous as all hell. So he says we’ll come and see you once we’re inside.

I get to my seat and it’s 10th row on Stone’s side, I can’t complain at all great view probably one of the better places to be, not too close but not far. So I get a tap on the shoulder and there he is with Bec (Anthony’s sister) in all their VIP/backstage pass glory and my jealousy is at an all time high, now this is where the story gets to be uber awesome but disappointing also, my friend says he was a little bit late from work so he missed Ed out the back (he had gone off to do some other things) and I’m like ahh well you’ll see him afterwards anyways no probs, but he says no check this out, Ed had come to Bec and her friends out the back with a full list of songs and said to them “Pick whatever songs you want and that’s our setlist tonight”!!&$%!! I could’ve killed my mate I say to him you idiot you could’ve been backstage drawing up a dream setlist but instead you missed out because of freakin work! He says oh well i've seen the set and it's not bad anyways but he won't give me any hints as to what may be on it. He tells me Tim Robbins is at the show also, apparently he is town for some movie or something anyways. By this time KOL are just about ready to come on so we part ways as he disappears backstage again (Bastard!) and I'm stuck in my poor 10th row seats (J/K). KOL were good i thought, having not heard any of their stuff before i was quite impressed by them i will be getting there early the next couple of shows to check them out again for sure.

So we skip to between KOL and PJ and my friend and Bec come out to say hi again and my friend casually drops "I was just having a beer with Stone, he's a nice guy, real quiet, shy" I think he enjoys rubbing it in that he's backstage hanging with the guys and it really pisses me off, so we're chatting and i think a few people noticed the VIP passes on my friend and Bec and someone (I'm assuming a 10C member) comes over and asks her to get a shirt signed for him, my friend tells me what time PJ are coming on and he's pretty much right on the dot.

Main Set: Wasted Reprise/Life Wasted - Awesome, great way to start a show i think, although from where i was it seemed the crowd was a bit slow to get ito it but i think it took a few songs for the crowd to start firing. Animal rocked and was nice to see played again in Melbourne. Seemed a very high energy start to the show when they kicked into StBC and Corduroy, this was going off and the crowd were starting to get pumped and i think the band were feeling that too they seemed to appreciate it. Severed Hand much better live than studio i like this a lot when played live, Jeremy is next and i always enjoy Ten songs live especially the ones they don't play every second night (Evenflow, Alive). Insignificance blows me away, i always enjoy Matt's fill at the bridge part of the song about 2/3 of the way through, Army Reserve to me sounds suprisingly good live also, i wasn't a huge fan of this song on the album but have changed my tune after hearing it last night, Daughter gets all sections of the crowd singing although myself i loof forward to the tag more than the actual song and tonight it's ABitW Pt.2, Pink Floyd is my 2nd favourite band so i always enjoy some Floyd! Leatherman is played in Melbourne again, in '03 they did it and i'm suprised to say i think the crowd really dug it even though i'm sure half the crowd would never have heard it before, the main set is finished with DtE, Betterman & RVM with the tag of Save it for Later, albeit not probably the same one most fans are used to, it was sort of more a short version of it i guess you could say. I should mention that Mike was ripping so far this show, RVM he was really into it and bouncing around just generally being, well, Mike.

Encore 1: Inside Job is a song i'd like to hear in Pearl Jam's sets for a long time to come, this song has an amazing live feel to it, then we kick into Once, so far most of the set has been Self Titled/Ten/Vitalogy based and i don't think any Pearl Jam fan will complain too much about hearing Once!!! Come back is a little slow and murky for my liking to be at this stage of the set but it was well received and didn't interrupt the feel the show, Black next.... Probably don't need to say too much about this one it always tastes good when it hits the lips, although i must say the crowd was amazing for this version, and Ed and i think Jeff and Mike were really digging it and they seemed to geta lift out of it, and then Alive which i think from the shows i've been to (This being my 5th) had the best feel and sing along of the times i've seen Alive played, a lot of the 10C section doing the yeah! thing during Mike's solo and Ed noticed this and seemed to have a bit of a smile on his face watching the crowd do this.

Encore 2: Dead Man is a song i'd been wanting to see live for a long while now, and apart from Ed having slight problems at the beginning getting his fingers in the right places it was a solid song and one i'm glad to have heard, SoLaT is one of those songs that whenever you here the first part of the riff you're pumped, i don't think i've ever heard a version of it i wouldn't listen to 100 times over, Comatose was one i was really looking forward to off the new album and it's a dirty heavy rocker live one that can kill you're vocal chords in an instant if you're screaming along with it, Why Go i hadn't seen live before and i'm stoked they have bought this song back into the mix it's a good for a crowd singalong, RitFW is played with the lights on and the band seem to play this song forever, the end just goes on and on i think they were feeding off the crowd which was howling by this stage it always makes you feel good to look around with a couple of thousand other people yelling "Keep on Rocking in the Free World", a quick word between Ed and Mike and Ed says something to the effect of fuck the crowd tomorrow night we're gonna play this tonight and it's into YL. The band (except for Mike) starts packing up when it gets to Mike's final solo time, but Ed wanders over to Mike and has a quick word and then before you know it the band has strapped back in and Mike rips into the opening of Little Wing, I'd heard Mike do this by himself before but the band played the whole song start to finish it was a moment i won't froget quickly. Honestly looking at the band in the last couple of songs of the night it looked like they wanted to keep playing all night and the crowd had a lot to do with it i think, there were about 4 or 5 times during the show that Ed or Mike and even Stone on one occasion were looking into the crowd with this look of delight at what was occurring in front of them, the crowd was great for the show but i think Melbourne 2 or 3 could be even better if we all put our hands in together.............. I'm in an uncontrolable state of anxiousness for the next 2 shows, and oh by the way my mate is backstage for the next 2 shows as well as going out for drinks tomorrow night on the day off with the band, some people have all the luck! See you guys at the next 2 shows!!
